    Hi All,

I have a beautiful magnolia (potted) - and am observing really shiny deep green leaves (with several yellows under the the green) - some of the buds are dropping before opening (the plant has a lot of buds - but none have opened)

I am uncertain as the amount of water this plant needs daily.

It shouldn't need water daily, especially not this time of year.

The magnolia will want to stay moist but not wet, water it when the surface looks like it's starting to dry out. Add enough water that it runs through the pot into the saucer underneath. Drain the saucer afterwards so the pot does not sit in the water. When you move it outside in the summer, don't even use the saucer.

I can't give you an exact frequency to water but it will be more in the summer and much less in the winter.

You might find that the overwatering has already resulted in some root rot....if that's the case, the magnolia will get worse before it gets better. It may show symptoms of being underwatered because of root loss (yellowing leaves, leaf loss, bud drop, etc.). Take heart though, the new regime is exactly what it needs if it is going to recover.

Sounds like you are describing a southern magnolia (M. grandiflora). Was this overwintered with frost protection?

It is a Veitchii - although I just purchased it in a pot 2 weeks ago.
