after the blooms fall off we diligently snap off the old bits.
by bits i mean the bit with several long things that used to have flowers on them
we know others who never do this.
    how crucial is it?
    thanks all

Not really necessary. I do it to the ones I can reach because it make the plants look so much nicer. Also one has to be careful not to damage the new shoots growing around the fruiting structure when doing this.

    Thanks Eric
"it make the plants look so much nicer" do you mean the old bits look unsightly?
or does it affect the new blooms?

I simply mean I think the old dried fruiting structures are unattractive. And of course that was a typo, "it makes the plants look so much nicer." I don't think it has any effect on the new blooms.
