I have 3 mature crab apple trees that flower beautifully and produce abundant fruit. The only problem I have is the huge amount of suckers that are growing around the base of the trees through the mulch. Is there a way to get rid of them without harming the trees? Some of them go quite deep and are woody.

    Thanks!
