Parent rosette deteriorates and collapses after flowering, renews itself from sideshoots. You could just leave the sideshoots and allow the cycle to proceed. Or, if plant will get too big (make a clump) cut off and replant on their own. Search www for "bromeliads propagation" etc.

OK so I cut from the mother and it already had roots and seems to be doing fine. Will this cause any stress on the mother plant? Should I be using a Bromiliad fertalizer? Any suggestions?
    thanks

Usually when a Bromeliad has starting to send off side shoots or suckers it means that the parent plant has basically done its duty and is now dying off and from what I have read there is nothing else you can do but to cut the vase or 'flower' part off so the plant sends its energy to the new offshoots.

The dying mother rosette is probably already sending nutrients to the replacement shoots as it shrivels, cutting it away before it is spent would if anything interfere with this process rather than promote it.
