I have wanted Summer Snow and Summer Surprise for years, but I have never been able to find them available in the United States. Does anyone know if they are available States-side please. Re: Acer Rubescens Summer Snow they are 2 cultivars - Acer rubescens "Summer Snow" and "Summer Surprise". there are pictures of them in van Gelderens' Maples for Gardens page 229. "Silver Cardinal" has been variously categorized as Acer rubescens and Acer x conspicuum.

Note that there is some confusion between rubescens (or morrisonense if you prefer! :) and x conspicuum particularly 'Silver Cardinal' which is sometimes listed under rubescens. Rumor has it, anyway, that rubescens has a lot of variegated seedlings of this sort. -E
Re: Acer Rubescens Summer Snow emery, I never heard that rumor so thank you for sharing it. My Silver Cardinals have not yielded seeds yet but I'll see if I can get some rubescens seeds this Fall and propagate some. I collect variegates especially. Thanks for the information.
Re: Acer Rubescens Summer Snow Hi Katsura, I think Novato is better than Normandie for Silver Cardinal! I think I've killed (or at best greatly reduced) another one in the wet and late frosts this spring. It's had a lot of flowers but I haven't seen seeds. Even if you don't get any variegates, you'll no doubt get some nice trees, rubescens the species is beautiful I think. And not exactly a common tree... cheers, -E
my Silver Cardinal had multiple seeds Fall 2009 and I just looked at my germination flats and many of them ar popping up. They are some of the first so easy to germinate. This is my 1st years having had Silver Cardinal seeds. The cotyledrons are variegated on all of the germinants and although I have no true leaves yet, I suspect if the cots are variegated then the leaves will be but we will wait for verification. I was struck at how early and easily Silver Cardinal germinates. This validates emery's above remarks and Rob B's experience from his share on the 'Silver Cardinal' thread.
