Good morning @Japanese Maple addict and welcome to the maples forum. That's a very interesting comparison. I don't know Cosmos as it's not available over here. But there are so many cultivars that are so much alike these days, I am not surprised at your findings. An excellent first posting by you to make others aware.

is possible that Cosmos is the name of patent and Radiant the commercial name ?

 

patent for Fire glow is FG1 mean->Fratelli Gilardelli first selection -patent for Red Flash is FG4...

 

Interesting thought. If so, I will add it to the synonyms list.

Just found this quote from Maple Ridge Nursery re Cosmos.

'Not to be confused with ‘Radiant’, which was found as a sport off of ‘Cosmos’.

So the similarity is going to be very close indeed. Although not a synonym, it should he highlighted that if you have one cultivar why would you want another so very very similar.

My new Radiant, courtesy of Hippopottering Maples. Very excited for this one, now to move it around the garden until I find out where it wants to be in terms of sunshine:

 

Mine just does not want to leaf out. So I will enjoy yours Xi.

8th May 2022 and incredibly slow to leaf out. But they are here. I will be watching this little tree closely this year.

So happy to see these gorgeous little trees. Aren't they a lovely spot in the garden? Yours are both looking radiant, quite literally!

 

Thanks Xi, let's see how the three develop over the coming years. It will be interesting to see how differently they do due to location.

 

Took a chance and moved Radiant into a slightly sunnier spot a week or so ago. Ready to run out and rescue it the moment it shows signs of upset, but it seems quite happy at the moment:

 

I've only just checked my email for the day and see that at 4pm I received a notification from Hippopottering that they had some Radiant available... Sold out already - I imagine they sold them all within an hour or two. BUGGER!

Was anyone here on the waiting list and managed to grab one or two?!
For me it looks like another year of waiting!

This is happening more and more as this hobby/pastime becomes more and more popular. Hope you get one next year.

Looks like a healthy hippo purchase.. ? It will get going in 2024.

 

Yes, the colourful pot is a bit of a giveaway. Hopefully it will show more variegation next year.
