No way of telling from this distance, particularly not with the way it has been clipped into that meatball shape removing its natural appearance. Can you get a close-up of some foliage, preferably with unclipped leaves, please! Also, where was the pic taken?

Not sure I can get a closer picture to see the foliage. I was thinking it was "box wood" This picture was taken from http://koi-z-are-us.20m.com/ this guy has an amazing Japanese garden. I'm in the process of transforming my back yard with a Japanese look. I know it will take many years to get to this point. But ya got to start somewhere. Thanks for trying

This looks like the same box wood bordering the Rose Garden at Lotusland.

If it's a box - which is quite possible - it isn't something that you'll be able to grow successfully in Salt Lake City, I fear.

Could also be a conifer, such as a Sawara. In your region suitable candidates for 'poodling' would include junipers. During spring or summer local garden centers may have pre-trained 'poodles' for sale, they do here anyway.

Thanks for the heads up. Do you have any suggestions of trees/shrubs in my zone?

Juniperus scopulorum (Rocky Mountains Juniper) would be your best option. It could be sheared (as long as you are careful not to cut back into woody brown stems). There is also a weeping cultivar, called 'Tolleson's Blue Weeping', which would be better for your climate than the cedar (which also isn't fully hardy in Utah).

Nope - he just wasn't able to reply before. You might want to PM him again, just in case he became frustrated by not being able to reply before and letting him know I've fixed it for him.
