The trees of 'Afterglow' are glowing on the east side Elgin, one block from E. 26th—E. 27th, at April 7, 2023.

This 'Afterglow' tree looks particularly possessive, spanning both the house and the car.

'Akebono' trees are also to be found on this patch of Elgin. Below, an 'Akebono' is on the left, underneath the 'Afterglow' arm.

Contrast 'Akebono's sepals with the dark red sepals of 'Afterglow'.

On the grounds of MacKenzie School, at 40th & Carolina, there are two 'Akebono' trees:

These are not to be confused with the plum trees a bit further north on the school grounds:

The 'Rancho' on Windsor where 32nd Ave. would be is just starting to bloom:

At 26th & St. Catherines, the large, healthy Akebono is in full bloom:

While you're on that block, check out the variety of other cherry trees a bit further west, including the one that is ungrafted or grafted very low (mentioned before).

The magnificent 'Somei Yoshino' in Glen Park is about 50% in bloom:
    20230406_GlenPark_SomeiYoshino_Blumenthal_3222.jpeg 20230406_GlenPark_SomeiYoshino_Blumenthal_3224.jpeg 20230406_GlenPark_SomeiYoshino_Blumenthal_3225.jpeg

As every year, I apologize for the poor photos. This is a very large tree, and it's difficult to get close-ups of its blossoms.

This has not been a good year for the 'Beni-shidare' on E.35th and Culloden. The flowers were paler than in previous years, the bloom shorter, and now the 'Yae-beni-shidare' has caught up, creating with it, a floral canopy for the entrance on April 11, 2023.

The flowers of 'Beni-shidare' are much past peak bloom, but at least, it can still do mountain shots, as it is on the right side to catch Grouse Mountain.

    20230411_BeniYaeBShidare_E35Culloden_Eng_7640.jpeg 20230411_BeniShidare_E35Culloden_Eng_7641.jpeg 20230411_BeniShidare_E35Culloden_Eng_646.jpeg

Meanwhile, the flowering of 'Yae-beni-shidare' is approaching peak bloom at April 11, 2023. The second photo of the rosy-pink flowers clearly shows the "short, red bulbous base" of the calyxes and the minute hairs all along the pedicels. Which is the meaning of "subhirtella" in its name (Prunus subhirtella var. pendula 'Yae-beni-shidare', subhirtella > somewhat hairy).

The Somei-Yoshino on the NE corner of Windsor and E. 24th (Glen Park) is in its full, sweeping bloom at April 12, 2023.

In its sweep, it even manages to catch the saddle of Grouse Mountain, and the cross of the power lines, right at Easter!

Correction to my own post. There is only one 'Akebono' cherry tree, and it is now in full bloom.

The 'Yae Beni Shidare' weeping cherry on private property at 971 E. 26th Ave. (between Windsor and St. Catherines) was in peak bloom four days ago - photos taken on April 15th.

I find the little tree on the corner of 26th & Windsor very confusing. I've been told it's a plum, and I can see why it is characterized as such, but it sure looks a like double-pink ornamental cherry. Photos also taken on April 15th.

Well, I can tell you what I noticed right away when you told me it was a plum:
The blossoms come off the branch in single, lollipop-like buds before they open, unlike cherries. That's enough to convince me. I'll check out that link later, though.

Confuse yourself no more, Laura! It's a double-flowered Plum, and there aren't that many to be found.

Here is your double-flowered Plum, Prunus x blireana on the SW corner of E. 26 and Windsor.
    IMG_7776.jpeg IMG_7779.jpeg IMG_7783.jpeg

Here it is at VanDusen Garden.
    DSC00398.jpeg DSC00400.jpeg DSC00399.jpeg

And here it is on Fir and W. 12-13th.
    IMG_4011.jpeg IMG_4013.jpeg IMG_4012.jpeg

You don't need to check out the link to let go of the cherry!

The three mature and majestic 'Shirotae' trees at the entrance of Kensington Community Centre (west side of Dumfries, at E. 36th) are in bloom at April 19, 2023.

Looking at the buds, it's hard to tell if they start out pink and then turn white to open to the flowers; as some buds show white right at the beginning.

The two mature 'Somei-Yoshino' trees in Brewers Park (west side Victoria at E. 26th) have survived the park renovations and are in full bloom at April 20, 2023. The other cherry trees in the park have not been so lucky.

Kensington-Cedar Cottage's only 'Mikuruma-gaeshi' is looking a little worn out, but still game this year in its bloom on April 25, 2023.

Wow - what a difference a couple of warm days makes! Festival Favourite ‘Kanzan’ at 29th & Ross are in full bloom today:

Note to Wendy: Don't miss the two shots of the "two-tone" 'Kanzan'.

For ‘Ukon’ fans, there are many beautiful blossoms to see on 29th Avenue going east from Knight Street:
    20230429_29thKnight_Ukon_Blumenthal_3393.jpeg
    IMG_3394.jpeg IMG_3396.jpeg IMG_3397.jpeg IMG_3398.jpeg IMG_3399.jpeg IMG_3400.jpeg IMG_3401.jpeg IMG_3402.jpeg IMG_3403.jpeg
Note: There is one rather raggedy-looking 'Shirotae' amongst the 'Ukon' and 'Kanzan' - it's the 4th-to-last shot.

30th & Dumfries, looking both north and south, ‘Kanzan’ as far as the eye can see:

"Arial" view of Dumfries, looking north from 33rd. You can also see three young 'Kanzan' planted closer to 33rd.

Old venerable 'Kanzan', horribly cropped, on private property (barely) at 33rd and Ross:

'Kiku-shidare-zakura' is approaching peak bloom on the south side of E. 36th, between Knight and Culloden, at May 1, 2023.

    20230501_Kikushidare_#36Culloden_Eng_8113.jpeg 20230501_Kikushidare_#36Culloden_Eng_8117.jpeg 20230501_Kikushidare_#36Culloden_Eng_8131.jpeg 20230501_Kikushidare_#36Culloden_Eng_8118.jpeg

As it is not at peak bloom, some of the flowers are still opening and with their darker pink centres, look different from the ones fully opened. So the weeping Chrysanthemum Cherry at this point looks more like the non-weeping Chrysanthemum Cherry. Last shot of the extra sepals.
