    It’s very p
I have to confess..I’ve picked up several of this cultivar in the Autumn bargain section over recent years..here’s a couple of smaller 1m plants. All have coped with the heat this summer apart from one that died.. I think this may have been down to an unhealthy root stock.. as that one never seemed to thrive. The larger one in the above post seems to want to be a “standard” in form..am struggling to get lower growth but up top it is very healthy.

Here’s a few photos of 2 others to wet your appetite

Some overnight rain on my sorrowful trees. This Autumn is the worst since 76 for my maples. But important to show on the forum how a drought with record temperatures in the Summer will affect maples. They will come back next year!!!!?

Hi Derek - Such a shame to hear you’ve had such a bad year..I wonder whether this is because you’re 150miles south of me..or is it possible the hose pipe ban meant you didn’t water as much as you would have liked. I recall you were installing soaker hoses and these were ok with the ban - sone regions banned these too. Did the soaker hoses work out to your satisfaction?

Hi R, the soaker hoses did very little, with the heat evaporating everything so quickly. Tbh I feel very fortunate to have only lost around 30 trees. The woodland that's very near to me has so many dead trees now it looks very bleak and they are native.
But everything that I have left has new buds, so I'm hoping all will be fine come Spring.
But your observation of 150 miles north of me, makes me think that if the zones are shifting then maples may not be the most sensible of trees to grow. ( Down South at least). Perhaps the Ginkgo's that you mentioned in your earlier post is the way forward !!!? They survived when the dinosaurs didn't.
My two Ginkgo's are doing very well..... Lol.

I’m just shocked at the number you lost..were these mainly in the ground? If so I wonder whether the pot approach works better when there are hose bans etc..least you can drench a pot with a can in hot periods

Most all of the maples we lost here were in the ground. I'm still finding more. The maples in pots we were able to protect in the shade and keep watered, so there was some burning but not too many losses.

30 is such a difficult number, I'm really sorry. D, did your young griseum survive?

I don't think this is the "new summer weather", just that it's more likely to happen now than it was before. The drought was worse than the heat for our maples, for sure. But it's certain that over the last 10 years or so, it is notably hotter and drier. Of course we have a lot of burnt leaves still, but I try and crop them out of the photos where I can...

Here are another bunch, starting from 8 Oct. Changes are fast and furious now, some of the trees are now finished and leafless, others just coming in. I've taken multiple pictures of some, as they change so much day to day. (I took some A. griseum pics again today)

Hi E, yes it's doing well. I have found my species trees as a whole have fared better than the cultivars. I just hope next year the Summer isn't so brutal. Btw our hose pipe ban looks like it will go on into next year. Thank goodness we are having some rain. Lots to think about for everyone on the way forward for growing Japanese maple trees I feel.

You have made a very good point R. Yes the ones I've lost were in the ground. On clay soil, I hoped the water wouldn't disappear so quickly. Time to think towards next year and beyond re your way of growing maples . Or move up to M @ROEBUK neck of the woods...

Not really. You can spot bits of variegation on it some years, but with fall colors show it more than anything else. I think it's not very stable generally, and when such maples get bigger they tend to show even less variegation.

The 11th through the 15th October.

Newly planted A. leucoderme from NC seed, making a really nice orange. I did water this one, which was obviously required for survival.

    A. palmatum seedling. The "big" Acer buergerianum is still green :

    acerb00_221018a.jpg

Another seedling, garden chairs and a snail. 99% sure it was from a dissecum street planting (the seedling) :

    acerp-div-023_221018a.jpg

One that I suspect is a cross between a palmatum and a shirasawanum, that's why I labelled it "shirpal" - which by the way sounds "exotic" ;-)

    acershir-shirpal_221018a.jpg acershir-shirpal_221018c.jpg acershir-shirpal_221018b.jpg

Acer discolor (I like the half-green, half pink leaves), and Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki' just beginning to change colours :

    acer-discolor_221018a.jpg acer-discolor_221018b.jpg acerp-o-sakazuki_221018a.jpg

A lot stayed in the shade and don't show Autumn colours yet.

    'Como', 'Koto-no-ito', 'Seiryu' :

    acerp-como_221018a.jpg acerp-kotonoito_221018a.jpg acerp-seiryu02_221018a.jpg

The adventures of "Lil' O. Dream of me", continuation :

    acerp_orangedream01_221018a.jpg

And two "Acer buddies" : Tricyrtis that flowers in Autumn, and Solanum Muricatum which is called here "poire-melon" ("pear-melon"). The latter is not supposed to flower in October, it's already yielded about a dozen fruit, but... Crazy weather.

A damp and misty start to the day here in Southern England. Many trees completely defoliated, but the ones that aren't are trying to give a show.
