Kiku-shidare-zakura, the Weeping Chrysanthemum Cherry, is now in full bloom on the south side of E. 36th (between Knight and Culloden) at April 18, 2021. Last photo shows the extra sepals.

Today, I went a little nuts with the Kanzan photos. I started at 29th & Inverness, where you can see the first Kanzan of the festival favourite planting:
    Kanzan_29thInverness_2021-04-18_Blumenthal_7303.jpeg

As you walk west towards Ross St., you see a few more, and a beautiful pink canopy overhead:
    Kanzan_29thInverness_2021-04-18_Blumenthal_7305.jpeg Kanzan_29thInverness_2021-04-18_Blumenthal_7306.jpeg

Then, when you stand in the traffic circle at 29th & Ross, you can see why this is a festival favourite. Here are the views to the east, south, and west, and the mountains to the north (with one distant Kanzan):
    Kanzan_29thRossE_2021-04-18_Blumenthal_7307.jpeg Kanzan_29thRossS_2021-04-18_Blumenthal_7309.jpeg Kanzan_29thRossW_2021-04-18_Blumenthal_7310.jpeg Kanzan_29thRossN_2021-04-18_Blumenthal_7308.jpeg

If you continue west, you will see that the one newer tree that has been planted to replace one that died and had to be removed is doing well, and the planting ends at Elgin:

On my walkabout today I visited the Shirofugen on Windsor & 31st, in full bloom:
    Shirofugen_Windsor31st_2021-04-21_Blumenthal_7336.jpeg Shirofugen_Windsor31st_2021-04-21_Blumenthal_7339.jpeg Shirofugen_Windsor31st_2021-04-21_Blumenthal_7338.jpeg

A bit further south, near 33rd, I noticed that there is a young Kanzan doing very well where the Sargentii hybrid used to be:
    Kanzan_Windsor33rd_2021-04-21_Blumenthal_7340.jpeg

Up at the Kensington Community Centre, at 37th & Dumfries, the Ukons are just past peak:
    Ukon_KensingonCC_2021-04-21_Blumenthal_7345.jpeg Ukon_KensingonCC_2021-04-21_Blumenthal_7347.jpeg Ukon_KensingonCC_2021-04-21_Blumenthal_7353.jpeg

And the three Shirotaes around the corner are pretty much done:
    Shirotae_KensingonCC_2021-04-21_Blumenthal_7355.jpeg Shirotae_KensingonCC_2021-04-21_Blumenthal_7357.jpeg

Heading north on Dumfries, I was treated to this beautiful view:
    KanzanMountains_Dumfries33rd_2021-04-21_Blumenthal_7360.jpeg

And then I was treated to the amazing Kanzan planting that runs along Dumfries from 32nd to 28th (or just before):
    Kanzan_Dumfries32nd_2021-04-21_Blumenthal_7366.jpeg Kanzan_Dumfries31st_2021-04-21_Blumenthal_7375.jpeg

Then I headed toward 29th & Knight for the Ukons:
    Ukon_29thKnight_2021-04-21_Blumenthal_7381.jpeg Ukon_29thKnight_2021-04-21_Blumenthal_7382.jpeg Ukon_29thKnight_2021-04-21_Blumenthal_7384.jpeg

And I couldn't help taking a few shots of the Kanzans at 29th & Ross again:

The Whitcomb are in bloom in the church parking lot on Knight and 18th, east side of Knight St. I was only driving by in the car, but you could see them from the far side of the street as you approached. A burst of pink for Spring!

These trees are only about 30% in bloom at the moment. Today being Sunday, I was able to go into the parking lot and see the trees up close, and I even got to chat with a parishioner who was very proud of the foresight of his church for having planted these way back when. He said they wouldn't be in full bloom for another two weeks, and that sounded about right to me. Note that there are four trees, as you can see in the last picture.

This fine tall 'Whitcomb' is still supporting its corner on the west side of Fleming (south of E.32nd) with its bird's nest and bloom at March 7, 2022.
Even if its trunk once had a major amputation.

The dandy little 'Whitcomb' glows in sun and shadow, on the north side of Glen Drive (east of Kingsway) on March 7, 2022. But the resident gardener/caretaker obviously didn't approve of its clasping the clematis on the other side of the sidewalk because its branching fingers have been nipped back.

Festival favourite 'Accolade' in bloom on both sides of Dumfries (north of E. 33rd) on March 12, 2022. Dumfries street is currently undergoing several construction projects.

Unfortunately, all of the 'Ama-no-gawa' trees along the Shoppers Drug Mart and No Frills shopping centre on Fraser from 30th to 29th have been removed by the parks board. I don't yet know why, but I'm trying to find out.

That's sad. They were a festival favourite. Thanks for the report. I've removed them from the map.

Apparently they were all dead and will be replaced - it's unclear with what.

On the brighter side, the Akebonos on 22nd Ave going east from Windsor are starting to look pretty nice:

And at Elgin & 27th, the Afterglow are almost fully in bloom:

'Akebono' looking in very fine bloom on the north side of E. 35th, east of Prince Albert, at March 25, 2022.

Thank you, Anne - post edited. I forget every year. Maybe next year I'll bother to look at the previous year's posting.

    March 25, 2022.
    Victoria Drive and 16th Ave.
    Three trees along Victoria Drive.
I think it’s Akebono Trees. 10% blooming maybe.

@A.Sato, thanks for this posting. That clearly looks like three trees, old ones too. Is this the exact same location as what we've had as two trees on the festival map?
    upload_2022-3-25_20-1-59.png

These would be 'Somei-yoshino', and to find them on the map, you either have to use this link: Neighbourhood Maps (vcbf.ca) or click on "Use old map" on the map the link on the festival website brings up. Then on the left, you can search by neighbourhood.

@wcutler Yes, it looks like the same spot marked as "two old big trees on the west side of Victoria". There are three old 'Somei-yoshino' trees.

Thanks. I see from the map that the original posting said "these trees". Maybe back in 2008 I was writing the map blurbs and only noticed two trees from the side, though the third one is a little visible at the ground in the photo used on the map. That's another reason I have the person who finds a tree do the map entry.
I've changed it to say "three 'Somei-yoshino' trees.

    Wow, E. 35th Avenue's great 'Beni-shidare' and 'Yae-Beni-shidare' are both in bloom at March 29, 2022.

Here they are on the north side of E. 35th Avenue, west of Knight; 'Beni-shidare' on the left, 'Yae-Beni-shidare' on the right.
