5th June 2021 and my Japanese sunrise has leafed out at last. The overnight shower always helps it look a little nicer IMO.

New (and tiny!) but I'm quite excited to see how this one gets on:

Good to know, thank you! Will have to keep it protected early next year for whatever the weather gods throw at us!

14th April 2022 and some lovely Spring greens on my Japanese Sunrise. Together with the red pettioles, it really draws your attention.

6th May 2022 and now a mass of Spring leaves. Something so new and fresh about this green, compared to Summer greens.

I spotted a couple of quite nice Japanese sunrise at my usual garden centre this morning, £25 for not a bad size, nicely healed grafts and looking healthy. I've put one aside as I'm going back later in the week.

Being a sport of Sango Kaku (as I understand it?) Does Japanese sunrise take pretty much full sun just as well? Is it similar in growth habit (upright) ?

    Thanks,
    Chris

Yes it takes full sun very well indeed Chris. As for growth habit I find mine is definitely more of a spreading habit grower than an upright.

Perfect! I've more or less decided on my plan for the front garden now, but it meant I was in need of a lower/spreading green maple for the full sun position. Green as it will go in between summer gold and a Pung Kil. This will fill the space nicely. It was that or possibly a Little Princess - I had one years ago in our old house in full shade, and couldn't remember whether JP could take full in or not? Japanese sunrise should be a good alternative though!

Lovely! Virtually all of my maples have dropped leaf a couple of weeks or more back, besides those in full shade. My Seiryu however looks like it's in the middle of summer and hasn't the slightest hint of colour change yet. The same for my little Shishigashira.

Agree C it's just really weird and our trees will suffer in 2023 if they don't get enough sleep. Bit like us really!!!
