This very small plant (fl. ca. 7mm) was found during a botanical foray near Port Alberni, June 1st. Located on disused railway R.O.W. altitude ca 400m. I've checked E-flora, but maybe I'm looking under the wrong family ?

Find anything else interesting on your foray?

Nothing really unexpected - possibly narrow beech fern (Thelypteris),but the Sori aren't well enough developed for me to be confident.
I can post an image of the underside if you'd like to look.

Sure, I'm living vicariously through others at the moment when it comes to seeing plants in the province.

I think Cystopteris fragilis is more likely. It isn't Phegopteris connectilis, which is the E-Flora BC name for narrow beech fern.

Hi again Daniel, and thanks. You are the 2nd authority to suggest "Fragile fern". I have previously had that sp. pointed out to me and it then looked like the image in Pojar and MacKinnon - so very unlike the photo I sent to you. What are the characters that are leading you to C. fragilis ? I'd like to know so that I can be more certain in future. (I'm not sure if you're aware but I learned my botany in New Zealand, and am only now getting any confidence in identifying Pacific NW species !

Compare against this photo: E-Flora BC Photo Gallery: Photo Details

Overall look: frond is broadest at the middle on a single axis. Stipe is shorter than remainder of leaf blade.

And then looking at shape of the pinnae / pinnules. Alternately arranged along the secondary axis, fan-like with soft toothing.
