This one is a new one for me, so I thought I’d create a new thread for it since there isn’t one yet. I have bought and planted it this winter. It is supposed to get really big leaves and great fall colour, as the japonicums are known for.

Never seen this one before M, so I'm going to be watching this thread closely.
So far it looks like it's going to be a winner for you.

Thanks D, yes I am also very curious to see how the leaves will develop during the seasons and how it handles sun. It is supposed to be a seedling of Vitifolium as I understand it. I will keep you updated!

An update on my Indian summer. It is in full sun all day and is handling it quite well as it has only recently been planted out. I like its fresh green summer color.

It's looking wonderful M. I wonder if the name will be changed as Indian Summer comes from the saying of native Indians... ??? So much is changing atm, so this could be another.

Yeah even though it is not always clear what makes them select a cultivar name. In this case I do feel it is good name, marketing wise. I interpreted it as it was maybe given this name due to beautiful fallcolors or something like that.

My Indian Summer is filling in nicely and is starting to get the big leaves it is known for. I am hoping for some nice fall colour this year!

Summer colors on my Indian Summer. Some leaves are a bit crispy as it is in full sun all day but all in all it is holding up nicely. Some new growth is starting to appear.

Would love to have that few crispy leaves M. The Dutch weather has been kind to you this Summer it seems.

Hi D, yes I am fortunate the ground water level is high here so my trees still have access to sufficient water even though there has been little to no rain. This summer really did some damage to nature and gardens alike. I hope your trees will recover soon.

I planted mine in the Fall of 2019 from a 5 gallon and it is now taller than my house. The limited information I could find online says 8-10ft height but this is wildly inaccurate it seems.. I may have to try to move it or cut it down.

If you prune out each years new growth at end of Summer, then there will be no need to cut it down or move it.
Yes it's nice to be able to let it do its own thing, but asthetic pruning can be equally as nice.
I would remove the soil from around the trunk. It can cause it to rot over time otherwise.
    A lovely looking specimen btw.

When you prune an established tree in Autumn, since you can't prune the roots at the same time (ecept when it's potted), the new shoots will be very long. In that case, you might want to prune it again in late June.

Otto (Bjornson) can probably give you more accurate advice...

Thank you for the info. I am very nervous about wrecking it with pruning incorrectly but I think I will give it a try.

Anyone have any fall color photos of Indian Summer?

I'm looking to buy one, Bryan Rule listed it recently in his top cultivars.. Fall color looks incredible!

The Fall color is pretty spectacular. The color seemed to be a deep red to almost maroon when it was smaller but last year I got a very fire orange that glowed in the sunlight.
