Cultivar Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' is extremely well known. The synonym is Mai kujaku. (Yano).

 

Cultivar Acer japonicum 'Kujaku nishiki' and the synonym is Maiku nishiki. (Schmidt).

 

Cultivar Acer shirasawanum 'Aureum' is in most enthusiasts collections. The synonym is Macrophyllum Aureum. (Vertrees/MOW).

 

Cultivar Acer palmatum 'Matsuyoi' has the synonym of Machiyou. (MOW).
And a second synonym of Machioji (Esveld).

 

Cultivar Acer palmatum 'Matsukaze' is extremely popular amongst collectors. I have it in my garden. The synonym is Machi kazi. (Vertrees).

 

Cultivar Acer palmatum 'Lutescens' has the synonym of Luteum. (MOW).

 

The synonym is Major Achievement? That seems odd.

The story I heard was that 'Kaba' is Japanese for hippopotomus and the tree was named 'Kaba' by one of the Dutch nurserymen in honour of John Gibbon, founder of Hippopottering nursery and disoverer of this tree.

I found it quite an odd one as well, but there it is in the World checklist. But as I wrote, the whereabouts this was written in the past is unknown.
