Maybe early days R, but they are looking fantastic. Your Crispifolium is interesting, I'm aware of a lot of talk about this and Shishigashira being the same maple. Is that your opinion? Or do you feel that they are different?

Thanks D..re Crispifolium..it’s a difficult one..The growing form and leaf looks pretty much identical..Even if you have one of each it would be tricky to determine for sure given the fact that two trees of the same cultivars can have slightly different characteristics..I have several potted Sango Kaku’s that are different and two Ukigumos from the same supplier and batch using the same compost and garden location and you can see a difference.
JD vertrees says there are two forms of shishigashira. Mejishi (female lion) the one I have and O’jishi (male lion) which has slightly larger leaves...Crispifolium is not mentioned in the Shish. narrative but is listed in the cultivars not elsewhere described section (no photo). I don’t think you can form a definite conclusion from that. Put it this way I would not go out of my way to collect both!!!

Palmatum crippsii has a similiar leaf form but that is definitely a different cultivar.. the petioles are longer and it grows with a more regular palmatum form than Shish./Crispifolium that has super thick branches and super short petioles.

Good afternoon R, just got back from picnic lunch so sorry I didn't reply earlier. I'm tempted to put the two as simlar to on the other thread. Especially when you say if you had one you wouldn't buy the other. And tbh this is what that thread is about, saving people getting two of almost identical cultivars that you can only ID with a label.

Thanks so much for the informative reply.

Lots of rain the past couple of days. Some random shots while walking between the raindrops:

They look so happy and refreshed J and looking at the weather in parts of the US, the rain must be very welcome.

Is this really Spring, I think many of us are asking ourselves the same question here in England. Such a strange one this year. But onwards we must go, battling the elements, Lol.
So here are Koyasan, Dr Brown, Phoenix and Shaina a few minutes ago, looking fairly happy, considering.

Green Trompenburg. My first season with this one, however seeing an incredible speciation Batsford Arboretum, it had to go on my ‘wanted’ list. Just waking up, and I’m not expecting anything special until around October ;-)

Flavescens vs Viridis. I know Viridis is an incredible all round green dissectum, but wanted to show the subtle (to some) difference in leaf colour at this time of year.

The difference through the naked eye is more substantial. The Flavescens has a yellowish glow to it.

Summer Gold. Awesome. Not really much else to say. It’s a yellow green palmatum with nothing that initially stands out as being special. But it just is.

The third pic is Summer Gold between Okagami and Tsuri Nishiki. A very good red, and a very good green... However, the Summer Gold just glows!

A couple more of Summer Gold trying to catch the red margins around the edge of the leaves.

Lovely Luke, don't you just wonder at how they just hang there, then in a few days spring up. I never tire of seeing this, year after year after....

Wakehurst Pink - one of my all time favourites. I’ve done a bit of work to it to ‘try’ and improve the aesthetics of it. Pruned out some lower branches and tried to tie the canopy a bit closer as it was a bit flat and sparse.
I think it’s looking good and now it’s starting to wake up I thought I’d take some pics. I hope you like them.

It’s just started raining, but if it stops I’ll get back out there and try and do some reds ;-)

I do Luke and the fan shape you have got there will get better and better over the years. Great root flare as well.

Sun just showed it’s face again. Weird weather here in Oxford today.

Before the reds as promised I just had to show this. Acer dissectum Filigree. It is at its best right now. Only a baby but when this puts on some size it’ll be a real winner.
