Chikinsho {1733}. Also written 'Ki Hachijo', "tree from Island of Hachijo" Vertrees' 2nd edition. In full sun with late afternoon shade. Prolific seed setter {this year even more than usual } and a nice winter sight, appearing to be blooming light brown from a distance. This is the first year I have really noticed the vertical white bark striations beginning, mentioned in Vertrees' book as "prominent , especially as the bark ages". H 12' x W 21' { H 4m. x W 7m.} at 20-25 years old. Pics 1 + 2 Oct. 8/07. Pics 3, 4, + 5 {wet bark} Oct. 21/07.

Thank you Sam, feel fortunate that we're able to grow these trees and can discuss them on this forum, thanks to UBC and staff. Interesting to watch the cultivars develop character as they age , and makes one wonder how century old cultivars appear in the gardens in Japan. Enough rainfall and no fertilizers used, a mulch sometimes.

    Re: Acer Palmatum 'Hikachijo'

These pics should be moved to the 'Kihachijo' thread - as 'Hikachijo' is probably a typing error. The 2nd set of pics are correctly labeled.

The leaves of my cultivar look slighty different, (perhaps they're no fully developed yet), but is an excellent performer, and the bark is starting to show its characteristic shape.

Pics taken today, Nov. 15 2010

First pic- chunky-margined young leaf, showing reddish fall color (more sun)
Second pic - interior old growth, showing yellowish fall color (less sun - bent out for pic)

I'm glad to see others have seen the green leaves turn red in lots of sun-- that's what I'm experiencing with my small Kihachijo, planted last fall. I was expecting celery green, but instead the sun did this...

2016 edit: It appears Forest Farm sent me the incorrect cultivar (understandable, considering the time of year I ordered it). It's most likely Kinran.

15th April 2021 and this is my first posting of my Acer palmatum 'Ki hachijo'. It was a new tree in 2020, so nothing much to show. But now I will post how it gets on this year. Not doing too bad at all after a week of frosts.

I can’t wait for mine to come out. The bright green leaves with that serrated lobes makes a great companion against something like Shojo Nomora or Okagami ;-)

Yes 2 LTR Luke, hence why I've not posted before, still very young. But this year I think it deserves a go here.

39th April 2021 and now the vivid green leaves of my Ki hachijo make their appearance. What a maple this is for Spring colour.

Edit 1. As I was just reminded by Luke, there are not 39 days in April. So it's the 30th not 39th, lol.
