Acer palmatum 'Peve Starfish'

A new one from Mr. Maple/Nichols Nursery, can't wait to see this one grow :)

 

Don't think this one is getting enough sun, too green :)

 

Good growth on this one this spring, really like the leaves.

 

This cultivar is in the convexum group classification, it is extremely dark and so different. In my garden it is always a stand out maple that draws comment from family and friends.
I have this in a sheltered position that has only a little sun in the morning and none after 1pm. It is not a fast grower and is best placed near a light green or yellow companion plant to best show its qualities.

Here a few pics of my young Star Fish.

 

August 5th 2020, so one month on from my last photo of my Starfish. Not having any problems with the heat at all. High Hope's for a good Autumn show this year.

 

20th August 2020 and after days of rain after a heatwave, everything is picking up again. Severe storms coming tomorrow, so I hope I can batten down the hatches so to speak and protect my trees.
The deep dark reds are now fading ready for the Autumn display. I love the colours in all three seasons with my Starfish.
I just thought a close up was deserved today.

 

4th September 2020 and the days seem to be getting shorter and shorter, which is a bit too fast for me. Busy time of the year in the garden for us maple growers, with less daylight !!!
A morning with no dew or rain, but colours now popping up everywhere!!
My favourite in my garden today is my Starfish.

 

12th September 2020 and believe it or not, new growth is everywhere in my garden together with Autumn colours emerging. Temperatures of 31°C expected in a couple of days.
Another that is bucking the trend towards Autumn is my Starfish. Does not need a strange year for this one Lol. It is always strange!!!

 

17th September 2020 and the colours are making a big appearance now and some like my Starfish just have that presence all the time.

 

25th September 2020 and some colours are more subtle than others. But that is the beauty of maples they are all so different and often the same tree is different year on year. This is why they are loved the world over.
What a change to my Starfish since the last posting. The reds have gone.

 

4th October 2020 and my Starfish is exceeding itself with a variety of greens and reds. The rain helps !!!

 

11th October 2020 and my Starfish is giving it's all now. I really love this cultivar.

 

26th October 2020 and my Starfish looks like ot has a glow after all tbe heavy rain.

 

29th October 2020 and from dark red to this bright crimson. Always a winner in my garden for family and visitors alike. Sadly only my wife and I having the pleasure this year. But at least I can share here with you all.

 

2nd November 2020 and the winds have battered everything here in the South of England all weekend, but my Starfish said this morning, "I'm still here " .

4th November 2020 and the first frost of this Autumn has arrived, so with the few left that have got leaves in my garden, here is my Starfish covered in a cold icing and giving pleasure to the end.

 

Let's see how much growth we get this year.

 

Second year with you D, it should get going really well with your tlc.

 

14th April and a new season starts to unfurl for my Starfish. It is always a talking point for my friends and family, so I hope after a year apart they will be able to see it again soon and make comments about it.

 

23rd April 2021 and this cultivar is just about perfect IMO in the morning light. So I had to share with all my maple forum friends.
