@zfrittz, should I not have used a mixture with the aquatic baskets J ? All my trainer pots Bonsai I use this mix with no problems, but I am new to the basket planting so any advice is gratefully received.

This is fine, the mixture works well as long as it is the same throughout the pot, the problem is to leave old soil stuck to the roots, because akadama dries very quickly and the old soil that is left maintains a lot of humidity.
One thing I do the first year is to put a very thin layer on top, of akadama and chopped moss so that it maintains a little more moisture while it roots.

Thankyou J, that has put my mind to rest. You and I @Shin-Deshojo have been a great help. I will let everyone know next year how it all went. Lots of roots hopefully!!!

    Er...

I think the container is too big for the tree. I mean, especially if you use colanders od aquatic baskets, increasing the size of the container every 1/2/3 years is better.

    My 2 € cents...

Did think that tbh Alain, a very good point. I will order 3 smaller ones ready for next year. I'm hoping they will do OK for 2021.

The sun is shining after a very cold start to the day and a few buds were looking rather nice this morning basking in a little warmth.
Katsura will be the first to leaf out once again, not long now.
    Katsura 706.JPG Katsura 707.JPG Katsura 705.JPG
Next is my Kasagi yama swelling nicely.
    Kasagi yama 705.JPG
And last but not least Manyo-No-Sato
    Manyo no sato 705.JPG

Storms tomorrow, with lashings of rain, but much warmer, so Spring will certainly be on the way.

Good afternoon R, you know each year we say to ourselves, "I wonder what our trees will be like this year". I do anyway Lol. Well this season the buds are looking the best I've seen in years, so I am hoping 2021 is going to be a fantastic maple year. I really hope so.
Is your Aconitifolium further along than previous years or about the same.?

Hi D good afternoon to you too :) yes about the same as normal.. some really nice strong looking buds emerging all over..but mainly tightly closed..I’m going to get cracking with a huge amount of repotting this weekend. I could do with a ton bag of pine bark chips, but there are no local suppliers

Seems to be a shortage everywhere. Hopefully things will improve as everything else does. Think the lockdowns has caused a lot of ongoing problems with supply. Have you thought about larger bark chippings and putting them through a wood chipper to reduce them down?

    Nice pictures D,
I'm glad to be here as I am sure I will really enjoy seeing pictures of the whole member's maples all the season.

Sunny patches but rather windy today.

The early ones : Orange Dream, and Katsura which has darker, actually more orange leaves. We've had some frost at night in the past few days so the others are in the wait :

Had the same around 45 minutes ago R. As you say Katsura has a lot to deal with in early Spring.

After all, spring is not that early. After very warm temperatures, we had a cold wave and looking at photos from previous years, it's about the same as far as budding out is concerned.

Don't often post pics of cultivars at such an early point in the spring? , mainly if there is no added description you don't really have much of a clue to what you are looking at (unless it's the usual suspects) and will only be able to tell what cultivar it is when in full leaf with all the familiar traits of the said cultivar ? So we have a red pygmy then katsura ( Morrisons £12 lock down special from last year) and the last two with descriptions in the pots :) these are two which i bought off Luke last year , looking promising both full of breaking buds (30+ on each) at present , should see some nice leaf colours here hopefully and finally my coral bark showing off in the sun !!

It seems many are just about to bud out. Between two showers of rain (and it's very windy too), I saw that the buds on my 'Momoiro koyan-san' were showing a nice pink colour :

    acerp-momoiro_210312b.jpg acerp-momoiro_210312a.jpg

Next to it, I have these two seedlings from shirasawanum 'Autumn Moon' that I already posted about, a big one with smaller leaves than the type, and a small one with large leaves :

    The smaller one :

    acershir-sem2_210312a.jpg

The taller one, which I suspect might be a cross between shirasawanum and "palm-oenum" :

    Hello.

It's been a long time I did not come around here. Your maples are very beautiful.

Spring is coming strongly to Mallorca. I attach some photos.

Here are a few from this morning that are starting to push along now, sadly a hard frost is forecast for Friday night , so they won't like that at all.
They are Little Princess, Vitifolium, Jordan and Katsura.

    Hello D,
Nice to see you are having some leaves in your garden.
Watch out for the next frost coming this weekend, one of my kotohime got 80% of his leaves frostburn.... : (

Maybe covering the little princess at night or entering it in the house would help.
