@GreenLarry good afternoon Larry, yes the wind has done for a lot of the leaves everywhere now. Nice to see in the second photo the Norway maple amongst the hedgerows and looks like it has escaped being felled by yet more development, but only just !!!

I noticed that on a line of street trees (plane trees), only one had kept its leaves. One day, I came back home later and understood why : it was next to a lampost. Light pollution. This is not the case for yours though.

Yes! Enter my property at your own risk or he will bite you legs off.

Seriously, he is the worst watch dog ever. He has never met a human that he doesn't like.

Looks like things are accelerating with the election and the garden this morning. A Viridis has displayed lots of yellow and the Baldsmith turned red almost overnight. Still only one Shishi leaf and a couple of Ryusen leaves have changed.

Yes it is on the border of what was a farmer's field. That got bought out, along with vast tracts of land, for new housing. The tree is on the edge of a public path. Such paths have to stay by law.

Its another bright day here in Southern England, but so much warmer.
I still have some colours but probably not for too much longer.

I'm attempting to root a small cutting of a Katsura in water. Its been in there a couple of weeks now and hasn't wilted so hopefully roots will appear soon. Then it can be potted up. Will probably keep it indoors the first winter.

Good luck Larry, I have never been able to grow a maple from cuttings. Grafting, seeds or air layering is my only success for maples.
Do let the forum know how it goes .

Maple cuttings "in water" are doomed to die. I know some managed to save a couple, but this is not the right way to maéke cuttings.

Firstly, "water cuttings" have much less chance to survive than cuttings done in a suitable mix.

Secondly, ths is not the right period.

You can have good success (around 50% at least) with cuttings taken between mid-june to august, 1 or two year-old twigs.

Winter cuttings, that is when the leaves are gone, when the tree is in dormancy, is possible. I had something like 5% success one year, 0% the next year.

    My 2 €-cents worth....

Why would cuttings rooted in water be more likely to die?

If new roots appear, they're as good as those done in soil mix, but the chance of seeing new roots in water is lower than in soil mix.

I've managed to take a few photos this morning after a foggy day yesterday when I could hardly see any of my maples, Lol. Thankfully I still have some colours.

Just seen this Larry, a person who can answer this question better than any is J @zfrittz. I have linked this to him as I'm sure he will be able to explain with his expertise in Hydroponic cuttings.

Love the late evening glimps of the sun on your maples J. Gives your trees a different dimension.

Oh how the ever increasing concrete jungle all around us needs the trees to soften the blow. Can see you weren't looking at the buildings whilst lunching J !!!

Every year the colours are different it seems. Jerre schwartz should be orange but is yellow and red this year and my Ojishi was completely yellow last year and is now more orange and red, apart from the most recent growth which is still green!
