Acanthus can spread very aggressively once established - it probably came in from my garden. :-)

Although it's a pretty plant I find it it can be invasive so it probably came from nearby - I have some planted in my front yard but they are now popping up in my backyard.

What if the stems are cut before the fruits ripen?

Acanthus spreads mainly by rhizomes and even the smallest bit can regenerate into a new plant. It's when these creeping rootstocks pop up underneath other shrubs and perennials that you know you've really got a problem on your hands.

My mother sent me a few photos of her garden (zone 3) that I thought I'd share; I think the hops is trying to take over, or at least take the truck :)

The last photo I had to throw in as an aaahhhh moment...

It's rather cold in Hampshire atm, rain overnight and very strong winds forecast for tomorrow. Took these few in my garden a few minutes ago just in case they don't do well in the wind.
I love my Hosta Mouse ears, so small but lots of presence. Managed to get quite close for a photo this morning.
Lilies are still not out, can't wait for the perfume they give. Hope to post in next few days.

So many people ignore these, but the diversity in colour and texture is too wonderful to just pass by. Another dimension to the thread Nik. 'Lovely'.

Nearly there !!!! Some of our dwarf star lilies. Plus another view of our Mouse Ears Hosta standing small but proud. Our egg shells are doing their job.

And why don't people grow more ferns !!!??? Yours should surely convince otherwise. We have a few underplanting some maples, but not as many and as large as yours. Love the Burgundy Lace btw, it's one of our favourites. Amazing close ups Nik.

My garden is mostly leafy shades of green, yellow and burgundy these days but there are a few spots of brighter colour. The hummingbirds love the fuchsia!

Good evening Margot, photo no 3 nearly jumped out of my computer screen, lol.
Oh how my wife and I wish we had Hummingbirds come into our garden.
I know what you mean about shades of green at this time of year, but you certainly have some wonderful colour in your garden.

Sometimes you can get some really good deals at Canadian Tire at the end of the season....think I paid $5 on clearance a couple of years ago (I don't think they know what they get and often there are some really amazing plants at good prices).

Good morning @pmurphy, just woken here after a weekend of destructive wind, so to see your beautiful garden of colour has really cheered my wife and I up. Wonderful photos Thankyou

I've just visited a friend this morning and he wanted to show me his new tree Liquidambar styraciflua 'Slender silhouette '.
I thought it was a nice tree for this thread as it is what it says, 'slender' and is ideally suited for a small garden. And as we know gardens are getting smaller. The Autumn colours are a spectacular scarlet. I will post a photo of it in October.

Not again!!! Baby rabbits in the yard... they eat a lot and stick around.. end results: a lot of damage to some plants.
