It's in such a shaded place that I cant imagine it's due to the sun.

So i'm thinking underwatering although the soil is still moist - moister than when I'd usually water my other acers.

Too much watering is just as bad as under watering. There is not a problem in allowing them to dry out a little to allow them to breath. So many maples and plants in general tbh are killed with kindness.

Thanks, D - I'll resist the urge to give it more water then!

If the soil is damp to the touch, why add more water. If it's dry then add water. It's very simple, but we all do try to complicate things at times. You are not alone, we have all been there Mani.

As you say it's just trying to be overly kind and not wanting to lose any more leaves!

I wonder if a soil moisture meter would take out any human error........

Hi Mani, definitely, I bought mine from Amazon mainly for my pots. it also checks the PH. Before you ask, just the acid side of neutral is ideal. But neutral is also OK.
