I purchased one in the summer of 2019 and all was fine until this spring. When all of my other acers were growing leaves the Wilson's Pink Dwarf failed to grow many and any that did grow were shrivelled up. I pulled these dead leaves off hoping new ones would grow but, alas, the tree has now perished.

Any ideas what could have been the cause of this? The tree was in morning sunshine but afternoon shade.

Sorry for your loss! The colour on yours was really eye catching!

I was also very disappointed, I thought I was doing a good job tending to it!! Just hope it doesn't happen again!

I agree with Ron that there are certain varieties that are weaker than others, which makes them more susceptible to disease and adverse weather conditions. I too have lost Wilsons Pink Dwarf over the years and am now on my final time with this cultivar.
I apply the three strikes and out process. After which, I do not purchase anymore.
There are so many other wonderful maples to replace it with; IMO why waste anymore time than need be on a difficult to grow tree.

Thanks for this. There was never any die back. I have just noticed that the bark has turned black a little but that only happened after the tree had died....

Thanks D. Well, that gives me some comfort that I'm not the only one who has found this variety difficult!! But sorry for your losses!

Out of interest, have you had any other difficult ones to grow so that I can avoid them in the future!!

Good morning @Mani, the other one of the early Spring pinks that a lot of people go for and I have found to be difficult is 'Taylor'. It is a very pretty maple you will see mass produced for garden centres.
One of the pink varieties that I have found to be strong is 'Corallinum'. I'll attach three Spring leaf photos of mine.

    Thanks for the info, D!

Ahhh Corallinum! That was actually a variety I was going to ask a question about!

Yours is a stunning specimen and I have seen pictures of it looking so pink it looks too good to be true! But now that I know it really does exist that answers my question! Unfortunately, in all my years of visiting local nurseries I don't think I have ever seen one for sale!

Hi Mani, keep an eye out online. There are specialist nurseries that supply this one. You may have to put your name and email address on some sites to let you know when one is available. I use Hippopotering a lot, they are of a very high quality with excellent packaging and competitive prices. (Chelsea gold medal winners).

Thanks! I've never seen that site before. It doesn't look like they have much in stock at the moment.

You're gonna turn me into an acerholic! :DDD

    Let's hope so Mani, lol.
Btw another pink is Shirazz, that's in stock at You garden online.
I'll post a photo of mine. It holds the pink way into Summer. Just a thought for you to consider.

Hi D, yes it is, 'well spotted'. It's planted just to the left and Jordan to the right.

Hi Mani, Mine is in the ground and in morning sun and afternoon shade. They do settle after a few years in the ground, although some get better colours in pots. I took another photo this afternoon and put it on the cheering ourselves up with maples thread. Its next to my Anne Irene and Jordan.

Thanks for the compliment about mine btw.

Phoenix has amazing delicate pink colouration in the spring..not as intense as Wilson’s pink more subtle..but I have found it stronger..and has a really nice mix of pink, green and bright red leaves now.

This year has been a real strange one alright..no aphid attack for me this year..I’ve had that bad over the 2 previous years but quite a few small trees died after leafing out initially very strongly.. lost a couple of Little princesses too and a Taylor.. All cheap diy store buys..I think I’ll stop picking them up.

Oh no! The Ukigumo I purchased recently was from a DIY store although it wasn't cheap! Lol! Hope it survives!

Your Shiraz is stunning! What is the green acer in front of it? That one is also very nice! All of them are! :D
