Spring is a great time of new life but such a worry for us gardeners and especially maple growers. I also keep all my babies under cover until May, even here in the South. Nervous nights this week!!!!!!

Just viewed your Seiryu. Oh dear not good. I've just lost Higasayama that looked exactly the same as yours. But we all have lots of others that are starting to look good so let's be positive about what we have. That's what I tell myself and there is always a nursery with a replacement.

Hi Luke, first of all do your children have any lawn left to play on??? Secondly let's hope the frosts arnt too severe . If it is then there will be another flush in May to look forward to. Might be worth considering a hooped style greenhouse for Spring next year. Easily taken apart for rest of year. Enjoyed your photos very much, lovely and sunny there in Oxford.

What a great idea. I will start looking at one for next year. To be honest I have never (sounds like I have been doing this for years) protected them and I haven't had any problems, apart from the Orange Dream I posted last week. Whatever is killing dicky5ash's Seiryu (sorry for your loss btw) looks like the same thing that the OD is suffering from.

Think it's because it was an extremely wet winter and February tbh.
If any of us gets through a Winter without losing one or two we are very lucky. Even Charlie from Amazing Maples seems to lose a few large ones each year. Hope he puts a few pics on this thread his trees are wonderful, very much like Emery's.

I am pleased to report that the large J.Aconitifolium I bought last year that developed some black branches soon after purchase does not appear to have had a reemergence and has leafed out very nicely, probably early days..but good so far!

Hi Jaybee63, absolutely wonderful!! I'm so amazed at how yours are so more advanced than mine even though only 16 miles apart. Perhaps it's being close to the Solent giving you a micro climate? Indian Summer is a new one on me ,(very nice)!! Looking at the news this evening we are all going to need some cheering up, your photos have really helped, Thankyou.

Hi everyone, just thought I would add a photo of 3 of my maples during Spring darkness. In the forground is Green Dissectum 40 years old, in the middle Crimson Queen 5 years old and Red Dissectum 40 years old. They are all in bud, but not leafing out yet. But sometimes the structure of a JM without leaves is just as beautiful imo. Hope you like it.

I know, but trying to stay positive. Are you still working?
I am at the moment, we can’t close the business unless instructed to by the government.

I’m not asking, but if you are in a role where that may be the case, you have the wholehearted admiration, respect and thanks of myself and my family.
I wish we could close our business, but that’s only an option with government stipulation.

You need to be out in the garden talking to your acers and coaxing then to wake up.
I can’t wait to see you pictures.
One of my biggest regrets when I’ve moved home in the past is some of the maples I’ve left behind, that won’t happen again, if I was to move, “somehow” they would all be lifted and coming with me.
The most beautiful maple I’ve left was an un-names seedling from Barthelemys.

I watch Amazing Maples on utube and he lifts his regularly to sell. He has proved that even very mature trees including his 100 year old can be taken to shows and then replanted back in his garden without any adverse effect. So referring to your point, 'Never leave them behind'. I'll start talking to mine tomorrow, my wife will think I've really lost it now lol.

Here’s my mikawa waking up. Sourced from Amazing Maples awhile back. Everything else is just getting going. I’m so grateful to have these trees.

    Thanks.

It’s got a great shape and should form a beautiful tree.
I always try and envisage how I can train and shape a tree when choosing.
    Thanks.

Hi Harcuvar, coming into life very nicely indeed. As I said on a posting earlier the structure and shape is as important as the leaves. Yours looks fantastic. Charlie sold you a good one there!! Your so right having these trees is such a help for mental health, especially during these difficult days.
