Hi AlainK, absolutely spot on re gardens, during this difficult time they will be our sanctuary. The weather here in Southern England is also doing the same. Your photos are wonderful, many thanks. I particularly like your Hana Matoi, I added this one to my collection last year but it's still not as far a long as yours. Really glad I started this particular thread, its cheering me up no end. Hope it's doing the same for everyone else.

    Want more colour galore?... ;-)

    'O-Sakazuki':

'Redwine' (the bark is dark red, like a Cahors, or burgundy wine, and it seems to be very vigorous, at least in a pot):
    acerp-redwine_200321a.jpg

    'Sango Kaku'.
If my water wasn't so hard -I have to water it every day from the hose in the summer, I suppose that the bark would be a more vivid red, and anyway it's very hard for a non-professional photographer to catch the right colours on a film. I mean, on a digital photo...)

I took a few other photos this afternoon, but when I seemed to have the right light and the right focus, there was a gust of wind ^^

Last one for today, one of the seedlings from my Acer shirasawanum 'Autumn Moon', the small one with big leaves and the seal of a passing bird. The mother tree is just beginning to bud out, like the 'O-sakazuki' mentioned above:

The pink variegation on the leaves show after they're mature (on mine), contrary to other variegated cultivars like my 'Butterfly' that tends to have less variegation when the leaves harden.

Thankyou so much, I know others on the forum will have enjoyed these photos as much as I have. Regarding your seedling from Autumn Moon, is this Spring 2020? If so it's so advanced in growth and your Spring is several weeks ahead of ours in England. Seedlings can give some wonderful shapes and varieties of colours. We have a few with quite strange colouring, so will post then on this thread when they leaf out.

Yes, the photo was taken this afternoon.

I heard from someone in Ireland (near Dublin) that when it was almost summer-like here, they had frost in the morning.

Now it's coming here but with an exceptionnally warm month of February by the Loire valley, that made the difference. But as I said, the "mother-tree" is still awaiting spring, the leaves are just about to show: I took a couple of pictures but because of wind gusts, they were all blurred, that's why I didn't post them.

Here, we're heading to a cold spell, like -2/+14.

We have cold nights in England all next week, but at least its dry and sunny after a winter of nothing but rain. I'm sorry Luke but Hana Matoi is a difficult one to purchase in the UK. I think Hippopottering have had it in the past. Im also finding it difficult to find a replacement Higasayama that I've lost during this winter. Anyway hopefully more lovely photos of forum members Spring maple photos still to come.

Pat at Hippo has them for sure 100% , drop her a line she will fix you up no problem but bear in mind they are young grafts, you will struggle to find any larger ones in the UK and if you did you would have to pay silly money , plus there is another place in Lincolnshire who have them but can't remember the name of the company off hand ??

Acerholic you have got it right with the cold nights here in the UK added a pic of some young grafts which have been in my workshop since last November , today was their first day out in the fresh air and decent sunny weather saying that they are now back in the workshop it's so bloody cold up here in the north at present so not taking any chances with them, budding up nicely though , never breath a sigh of relief until were in May always find that April can be a terrible month for air frosts !!!!

Castor great pics. I love the Manyo No Sato. I bought one of these over winter and I cant wait to see it. I hope it looks like that.

Roebuk thanks. I already have a couple on order from Hippopottering so will contact and see if they can add Mana Matoi to it. I absolutely love the stand you have for your young grafts. I'm guessing you built it yourself? I might try something like that.

Hi ROEBUK, fantastic staging you have made for your grafts, looks very professional indeed. I'm the same about April, it's a lovely month but my wife and I scan the weather forecasts everyday. May is safe.

Hi Castor, well Springtime in Georgia is truly wonderful and your pics have proved that. Johin is a favourite of mine and imo one of the moodiest of reds in the maple world.

Hi Luke, I to have a couple on order from Hippopotering, well I say order, I mean contact me when they are back in stock. Sadly we are not going to see any displays at shows this year, but on the bright side we should get our orders sooner as growers do not have to shut down to attend Chelsea etc etc. But at least we can see forum members trees throughout Spring on UBC.
I agree with you about ROEBUCK's staging I might do the same, although I dont think it will look as good as his !!!!!!

Just seeing this thread, what a good idea. So I went and took some snaps, and had a few from the last couple of days. Not nearly as far along as @AlainK to the south, most of the "Japanese Maples" are not burst here yet. But there are a few, and some other maples. Now expecting a freeze... But if it's only a small one, it won't do too much damage.

Well, that turned into a lot of photos. And I exceeded the 20, so I still have more! :) Let's see if I can list these:

    A. opalus
    A. ukurunduense
    A. davidii 'Karmen'
    A. pictum
    A. rubescens
    A. buergerianum ssp formosanum
Berberis thunbergii 'Diabolicum' (because it's so good!)
    A. mandshuricum x 2
    A. sterculiaceum
    A. takisimense
    A. x tutcherii
    A. buergerianum ssp ningpoense
    A. negundo 'Sensation' x 2
    A. japonicum 'Blushing Beauty'
    A. elegantulum (courtesy of Alain)
    A. pilosum var stenilobum
    A. caudatifolium x 2

Hi emery, my wife and I are sitting here on a dark cold evening looking at your wonderful photos of I'm sure just these are just a part of your amazing collection. It is so good to see members early Spring photos from around the World, all at different stages of development. We to are expecting some frosts next week and am hoping we dont awake to browning buds. Look forward to seeing more of yours and others on this thread.

@Acerholic thanks so much, and very glad to have provided an enjoyable distraction to you and your wife! Sharing is a big part of gardening, I always enjoy showing people around the place even if only virtually.

@dicky5ash that's a lovely one, although apparently it gets large very quickly! I need to add it onto my want-list.

Hi emery, not just my wife and I , I'm sure everybody on this thread thoroughly enjoyed your Spring photos. Virtual sharing is going to be the only way for all of us over the coming months, but at least we have that. I have taken 4 more photos this morning, Hana Matoi, Red Pygmy Sunset and First Ghost, I will add them to this post. Only small atm but coming on well in the sunshine. I will add them again when Spring growth shows leaves fully open. Just thought I would add these today to give a comparison of how different locations is affecting budding to leaves.

    Thank you.
I have not found it to be a fast grower so far..I bought one a few years ago and it has been rather slow..it was severely attacked by green fly in may last year and looked quite unhappy..I managed to pick up a few more of this cultivar last year at a garden centre..these seem much more healthy.

Here’s my P.Phoenix..I bought this 90cm tree last year..I had no idea how intense it’s spring leaf colour is...this is just a snap from my iPhone

Hi dicky5ash, What is it about the pinks that just make you smile when you see them leaf out. Am looking forward to our Phoenix leafing out hopefully soon. Just worried about the frosts this week. A lot of covering to do I think.
