Wonderful maples and a wonderful garden you have. And yes, ours are happier after the rain also.

I see you are also in Hampshire. Which specialists do you buy from?
I use Barthelemys in Wimborne, also RHS Wisley is pretty good and have travelled further afield when after something different.

Yes only a couple hundred yards from Roy Lancaster. We have purchased from many tbh. It always depends on what is available and what is on our wanted list. For small grafts we have had a great deal of success from Lotta plants Netherlands. We have also purchased from Junkers,Wisley,Mallet Court,Hippopotering. Unfortunately there is nothing really in Hampshire that specialises. We have visited Barthelemy's but he had nothing we hadn't already been growing that was on our list. Shame we don't have a Buckholtz locally!!! We are very fond of the Ghost series. We are hoping to take part in the seed scheme run by the maple society this year, not sure who to pay for this yet though.

I’ve been to Mallet Court, Mr Harris certainly knows his Maples.
I used to drive up to Chris Pattison once or twice a year, well worth the trip, but he has now retired albeit the website is still up and running.
I’ve recently bought 20 grafts from Lotta plants, great choice.
Wisley is really good for specimens as well as young plants.
I managed to convince Hippo to sell me one of their show plants and picked it up from the next show they did.
I’ve been using Barthelemys for years and know Wendy and Mathew well.
They have let me look around there other polytunnels and storage areas where they have some old well grown hard to find Maples.

Not that our website is ever very up-to-date, but it's too early to register for the seed distribution. As a member you pay only for postage. Robin, our volunteer who sorts and sends the seed -- quite an undertaking! -- has an article in the current newsletter where the process is detailed.

Yes Mr. Harris (Mallet Ct) is really a luminary, and a fabulous resource. I was very disappointed to miss the recent visit to his nursery with the society, but I wasn't available. The group also visited Karan Junker.

Shiraz. Never had a problem with this one, no die back, good growth and great colour change through spring to autumn

Had a nice and unexpected garden visit today from a couple who turned out to be plant fans, although they are winemakers and raise grapes mostly! Anyway inspired me to contribute to this thread. These are just pics walking around the garden, now in it's field stage and full of flowers.

Hi Wendy, the first pic is A. rufinerve 'Albolimbatum' (called Hatsuyuki in Japan). Following are A. circinatum 'Sunglow', A. robutsum with A. caesium ssp giraldii, A. x amplum 'Ample Surprise', and Acer 'Summer Gold' in background; silver leaved A. chingii in front of A. shirasawanum, A. flabellatum with red new leaves, A. argutum (maybe x stachyophyllum) in front of A. negundo 'Winter Lightning' and 'Kelly's Gold', A. tschonoskii ssp koreanum in front of A. longipes ssp. weixiense, and finally new growth on A. cappadocicum ssp sinicum.

Just thought i would add a pic of my Phoenix which is looking very pretty this year , think it might have something to do with all the rain we have been having recently, everything does look lush at present though

A little pushed for time to write out the IDs, ask if you don't recognize and want to know. But took some pics yesterday in the sun, gorgeous weather and less hot than it has been. Most maples have survived the heat wave well enough!

emery what a fantastic selection of trees you have coming along now , love the very last picture of the half white and green leaf, a large tree looking like that in a few more years will look beautiful.

Glad you are not being to stressed with the heat wave you are having at present and it's not affecting the trees more importantly. Makes a great change to see so many different acer varieties and cultivars other than the "generic palmatum" list we all see so much of on this forum , more lovely looking trees out there that never get enough picture time i think. Great set of pictures !!

Hey Mark, just back from over a week with no internet router, and of course little phone network here in Mudville! (Or Dustville maybe now).

Anyway thanks for the kind words. The trees are holding up quite well in the drought, we're not as badly off in Basse-Normandie as further west or south, although they are starting to suffer some and I'm having to water. But we escaped the serious heat wave a couple of weeks ago, it never really got into the 30s much here. We had also had good rains before the heat/dry spell began, which helped.

I don't know much about the tree in the last picture, it does have large white areas on the leaves so it might be fairly small. It's a new graft from this year that was a gift from an American friend, named Acer pictum 'Akikase Yutaka'. I believe it's meant to be more variegated and with less pink than 'Akikase nishiki'. I haven't found any other reference to it.

    cheers, -E
