Thanks but I don't think it's a Norway or Sugar because it's too small. I called it a tree but it is really more of a tall shrub. It's branches extend maybe 15 ft. high and 6 ft. wide. The trunk is only about 1.5 inches in diameter. It's crammed in between a couple of other shrubs. It's been there for years and I only really noticed it within the past couple of years when I started my own gardening. I thought maybe it was some kind of Vine or Douglas Maple. I think it turned yellow to orange last year. It was glowing yellow this year until the cold snap and then all the leaves promptly fell.
@dangerine49 I can't give you a good id one it, though I can say what it's not, which is a vine maple. It doesn't look like A. glabrum, the Douglas or Rocky Mountain Maple either. (I don't have glabrum, it's hard to get here, like lots of N. American maples). FYI, some Norway cultivars stay small, there are a few that hardly hit 3 ft!
Thanks emery. I was just guessing based on its size. I thought all Norways were huge. Whatever it is I like it!
Well, it depends how old it is, and how the roots can get nutrients: I've got ne that's about ten years old and is 15 cm tall. In fact, it was in such a small pot that it lost all its leaves in late August because of the drought. If the top is dead (which I don't think), the bottom part will sprout new shoots next spring in its 8x4x3 cm pot. Or so I hope ;-)

Here's photo's from my garden in November (set 1): Aconitifolium, Acer shirasawanum 'Auream', Acer japonicum Attaryi, Mikawa Yatsubusa and Autumn Moon, forgot name, Orido Nishiki, Katsura, Ariadne, Suminagashi maple, Ki Hachio.
(Set 2): Ever Red, Trompenburg, Kamagata, Uknown dwarf red Maple, Coral Bark, Beni Otake, osakazuki, Shishigashira (The Lions Head Maple would have had great color but we had a heavy freeze and the leaves fried on all my Japanese Maples), Twomblys Red Sentinel, Seiryu.
Set 3, Seiryu, Higasayama, Crimson Queen, Various Container Maples the Eskimo Sunset is planted in the ground, a type of linearilobum
Some fall colours from the southern hemisphere :) Autumn is just getting underway down here in Melbourne, Australia. I took these photos today in the Dandenong ranges. 1. Sugar maple (Acer Saccharum) 2-5. Acer japonicum vitifolium - One of the largest and most stunning japanese maples I've seen in our neck of the woods - I believe its between 40-50 years old. 6. Large Canadian maple (Acer rubrum fairview flame)

Great to see some pics from the extended fall! Thanks. I love 'Fairview Flame', some of the best colors I have ever seen here. Unfortunately on my young plant the understock died this winter, so the small tree was lost. Would like to replace it but hard to get in EU -- I know it's (rightly) very popular in Oz. Cheers, -E
