Re: When will my Jacaranda bloom?

Does anyone know if a Jacaranda will survive in Vancouver BC (Zone 8ish)....???? Aside from making a hell of a mess when they drop their leaves and flowers.....they are one of the prettiest trees around......has anyone had any recent success with one in the area or do I have to wait another 20 yeaars for the global warming thing to really kick in....???

If you start it now, then it will be mature by then. From what I remember they are hardy to around minus 5-8, but I doubt that it coulsd take that temperature for very long. Isn't it from Africa originally? Might not like the rain more than the temperature issue. Let me know if you can source one.

Jacaranda is recommended for zones 10 and up. They're considered borderline in zone 9b. Unfortunately, Vancouver is out of the question.

    Cheers, LPN.

Carol Ja ... Jacaranda is native to southern Brazil and northern Argentina.

It is only naturalised (escaped from cultivation), not native, in southern Africa. The genus is native only in the Americas.

Is this what you mean Bob ?

"I WAS SAVING THIS PIC FOR THE STUMPERS."

But it seemed to fit in here so well. Cheers.

We had a large and beautiful jacaranda in our garden in New Delhi; it was right outside our bedroom window and bloomed with bright blue blossoms every spring. While in Guadalajara, Mexico, in April, we saw a profusion of jacaranda trees, for which the city is famous. In Mexico, the blossoms are more a purple colour. It would seem this is a sub tropical tree that grows in areas with very hot summers and coolish, dry winters. Thus, probably not suitable for Vancouver, but we were looking today at a very large tree at 16th and Granville that looks suspiciously jacaranda-like. Obviously something else -- the blossoms had probably finished, too.

There are 2 beautiful Jacarandas in bloom on Carrall St. just outside of Dr. Sun Yat Sen Gardens ... they are roughly 30 - 40 feet high

Those are Paulownia tomentosa. @Willard can probably post a photo of them. I agree that the flowers look similar.
