This Spring makes me wish I were somewhere warm with my feet in the sand! (Spanish wells, Bahamas)

But seeing the maples change everyday is hard to miss despite the cold wet weather. Took some photos from inside since it is a wet and misty morning. Here are updates from the front.

Updated picture of Aratama and you can see Ibo nishiki to the left of the azalea mound. Soon the mound will be glowing with bright pink flowers as the azaleas have set many buds this year.

The back yard is coming along (please excuse the window screen pattern)

beni tsukasa to the right and goshiki shidare bottom right. Right from the patio is O'jishi and Mikawa yatsubusa. Standing tall directly left of the patio is Orange dream and left front of the patio is kamagata.

Lovely! just what the doctor ordered :)...didn't know you had 2 maple paradises at home.I mentioned earlier Beni Tsukasa is probably in my top 3...seeing yours now confirms this,I've always been afraid to give it much sun but those who do seem to get super colours thru the year....I'll try it.

Yes, we have both the front and back, all maples, conifers, and a wide collection of dwarf perennials and shrubs. We are very happy with our Beni Tsukasa, it may burn just a little the first year in the heat of the summer with watering, but the next year it will do great.
Thank you so much! I am glad you think so!

At last everyone seems to be waking up not before time!! Pics of Peaches and cream slowly unfurling, always a stunner to look at through out the year.

Well finally some warmth, 22C after 2 pretty hard frosts earlier this week. What a strange year. I celebrated by taking a few pics, and a few from earlier. I've been documenting flowers this year, so that's a bit of a theme!

    A campestre 'Silver Celebration'
    A pseudoplatanus 'Brilliantissimum'
    A diabolicum
    A pectinatum ssp laxiflorum
    A pseudoplatanus 'Corstorphinense'
    A capillipes 'Golden Increase'
    A shirasawanum 'Palmatifolium'
    A japonicum 'Vitifolium'

The last 2 demonstrate the main botanical difference between japonicum and shirasawanum, with the more upright bearing of the latter. This is why 'Aureum' was moved to shirasawanum.

Palmatums are not really out yet in sufficient numbers to photograph...

emery may i just say lovely pics, and also many thanks for the glorious warm weather coming up from France just what we needed here in the UK, and to think this time last week we had snow, spent the best part of the day in the garden. The change in the leaves is quite remarkable in the space of just 24 hours it's just as if someone turned on the light switch. As you state a very strange year up to press, let's hope we don't get any more suprises !!

A few pics of my Dissectum Nigrum you wait all year for this to come out just for a few days when it shows it's wonderful silvery sheen, then turns to dare i say another red dissectum albeit a nice one though.

The Brilliantissimum is one tree i have always liked , but just don't have the room for one. A friend of my mother has one in her garden which she planted in the early seventies , can only be described as amazing, just looks like one big pink umbrella beautiful.

Thanks! My old Canon Ixus is hardly fit for purpose to be honest, but if the light is right it can still take a good picture. The screen is going wonky so that may give me an excuse to spend at Christmas time. In olden days of film I had a manual camera, so perhaps I can figure out how to use one again, digital version. :)

Well it seems we may get some hail in this afternoon, and tomorrow they've announced at 24C, so it's Feb to July in the space of a day or two. But the temperatures are making everybody absolutely _race_ into leaf.

About Brilliantissimum, it is such a slow grower I think you could keep it at any size you wanted, or even grow it in a pot if you got a low graft. Would only require pruning every several years. But of course, though it's amazing during 3-4 weeks, the rest of the year it's very bleh and there's no FC at all.

But like your dissectum nigrum, it's worth it for the short display. That's a fine looking plant. I need to get more dissectums into the garden.

Since I'm passing through here are a few more from yesterday:
    A pseudoplatanus 'Nizettii'
A longipes ssp amplus 'Gold Coin'
    A cappidocicum 'Aureum'
A pseudoplatanus 'Prince Camille de Rohan', vey bright in spring before it takes its dark summer look.

Nothing wrong with canon ixus Emery,it's the only camera I've ever had !....super photos once again :)
Another fatality :( had a 6ft Tamukeyama(lo graft) in a container for a few years, planted in ground in autumn,is now dead.Starting to think areas of my garden have something nasty in them.Might have to stick my Toona in it's place when it's big enough.
Bi Hou #1 has been grown as single bare stem and kept itself that way until now...can't even see the stem this year...and Bi Hou#2 looks like it's cloud pruning itself ha ha.Shin Deshojo's showing quite a nice 2tone effect right now...hmm seems quite a bit of dieback in pic. to snip off.

Thanks Houzi! A couple from yesterday, thanks to the old Ixus. :)

    AP 'Shin Chishio'
    A sinopurpurascens
A longipes ssp amplum 'Gold Coin'
    A pauciflorum

I mean to ask you about eating the leaves on the toona; haven't tried except a quick munch, very tasty. Do you use yours in the kitchen?

I have just the regular t. sinensis (not flamingo) which I got for the kitchen, but it promptly grew to about 15m without a side branch, it's the silliest looking tree I've ever seen. Anyway I heard you only eat the pink parts, so yours should be even tastier! ;)

Here are some pictures of my parents landscape from yesterday. The home that I have known all my childhood and early adulthood. My wife and I landscaped it as a retirement gift to my parents after they had the in ground pool filled. They both agree that it is the gift that keeps giving as they watch the daily ever changing seasonal show from the 4 season sunroom and patio.

They recently put the house up for sale and it sold in less than 24 hours for above asking. The description mentions pristine home in a park like setting. i think our landscaping, the sunroom, and my Mom and Dad's exceptional care for the house is what sold it so fast. They both say the new home will not feel like home until the backyard is landscaped. Yesterday was our last family get together in the old home.

This bed had Autumn moon to the left, but it was moved to the new house and replaced by orange rocket barberry before the house was listed for sale. (Autumn moon is hard to find in a large size in our area and is Dad's favorite)

Hard to find local variety Black lightning (I wanted to move this tree to their new home before the house was listed, but no one was on board. Before my disability I would have moved the tree myself, but that is not an option now, all I can do is ask then tell others how to do it) The tree was going into my collection originally but I thought it would be a great addition to my parents landscape, a regret now as all known varieties of this tree died at the grower in the coldest winter a few years back. They did not have room for the old 25-45g specimens under polly and no younger trees were in production at the time. The leaves are like trompenberg but the branches arch strongly downward, easier to see on the lower branches as new growth touches the ground if not pruned by June. Summer color is much darker too kind of dark chocolate, great red in fall and cool winter structure. Young branches from last year are yellow/green like pendula julian with similar form, trunk and older branches are bright grey.
My guess is the name Black lightning comes from the dark chocolate summer color and the downward branches strike the ground like lightning if not pruned. The branches actually went to the ground while in a tall 45g container and needed pruned in order to get it into the ground.

Tuna is yummy but not sure about Toona Emery :)...I can quite believe it can end up looking odd,I was gonna train it as a single stem but now think it probably won't work....I'll probably let it sucker again(already got 3 extra plants from it as soon as it was delivered)
Maybe you should've been a landscape gardener JTI...both properties look stunning and colourful.Would the nursery be interested in propagating from your Black Lightning again?..seems a shame to lose a cultivar if it's nice though you'd also lose it's exclusivity.
I know what you mean about the family home. We've recently lost our dad so the family home we all grew up in has to be sold now. It's a great big Georgian place, too big for any of us to take on.It'll seem odd someone else living there even though all but one of us 'kids' moved out years ago.I'm sure it'll be divided into flats...shame

Few pics of Ghost's and various variegates most of which were planted out last year, then the rest will be following later this year, lovely weather over the past few days so every one is moving nicely now :) still quite a few variegates/reticulates to fully burst yet, but all seems good at present with no nasty suprises, a couple of trees which looked a bit ropey and tired last year were pruned and planted out and are making a good healthy recovery with lots of new budding and re growth (Phew) sigh of relief for sure on my part.

Sorry to hear about your Dad. I hope much like me that the memory of home stays fresh in your mind. Its always unsetteling when investors look at property in dollar signs and not as history and great architecture. Maybe you or I will win the lottery and preserve it and turn the gardens into a beautiful Japanese maple garden! Realistically I hope you find a great buyer for your Dad's home.
Thanks for the compliment! Glad you like the design. Also, I too wish the nursery would come get scion wood but they are too busy to really care. They were grafting before I knew my parents were going to sell the home, so I just felt time was on my side as long as they had the tree. Then my Grandpa fell and recovered well, but felt it was time to move out of his home, which prompted my parents to buy his newer home that is all one level. Grandpa moved to resort like living and is loving his new life choice. Its all sooner than my parents expected and everything happens so fast. Maybe I will cross paths with this tree 'black lightning' again...I guess I will always know where one lives :-) providing the new owners don't kill or remove it.

What a difference a few days make in the garden. Orange dream was the star for the past few weeks, then beni tsukasa, and now many others are fighting for the staring role or you can say they are all working together to make the space beautiful! A shot from the back window.
    124159-714ef4951452118e3585256064b3b26e.jpg

And a couple updates from the front window. The dwarf azalea mound is ready to burst in color. right now it has a moss like appearance from all those buds. Silver sword azalea is ready to burst in bright red. Golden ruby barberry is such a nice red color too in the front bed 2nd photo. The maples are open and creating a sense of privacy while working with the evergreens. Soon the neighbors will disappear from the front window and the view from inside is very tranquil. From the front picture window..

Finally the vast majority of the trees are out some of the leaves are still on the small side and need another week or so to fully open but it's certainly been a long wait this year.

The last two pictures are of the 'shade lovers' back of the workshop and back of the house. Only lost one tree so far this year 'Little princess' started ok then just gave up first one branch then another other, then you know it's curtains for the remaining other branches, so just dug it straight up and in the garden waste bin :(

Everyone looks fit and healthy a few container trees were re planted out last year and have come back strong with plenty of re bud, and vice versa a few ground trees were lifted last year and are liking their new positions, but with the maples only time will tell how they progress.

Here is a discovery by my friend Elpedio. It started out red then orange and now is a apricot color with some pinks in areas hit with the most sun. Shaded under-story leaves have a translucent appearance with a hint of soft green veining. Its held this color for 3 weeks so far! From a distance the overall tree has a color like no other.

Here is the same tree (from the post above) and its form taken today. One photo is "as is" and the other is using a filter to compensate for the lighting.
