This spring it's opening very dark red. The tree's lower branches took a real beating from the rabbits (who stood on the high snow pile and ate everything they could reach), but thankfully the tree is leafing out normally on top and re-budding on the bottom.

I had never heard of this cultivar until a couple of weeks ago. I go to one of my favorite nurseries and they had a beautiful tree and the guy says "It's been here a few years, maybe they will make you a good deal." I go back today to inquire and it's been SOLD!!! Oh well, somebody got a really gorgeous tree.

    Bummer. It is a beauty.

Are you in the US? In the past few years Conifer Kingdom has been selling these very cheaply-- even in the 4-5' size.

I am. I noticed they have a good price on them. I may pick one up pretty soon. The tree I wanted was a large specimen tree and I didn't really need it at this point but I loved the form it had. I really need a weeping shade variety for my next project so a smaller Tsukushigata may have to wait for a little bit.

This is one of my favorites. I was looking for a dark red, almost black and the color is fantastic. Also very vigorous. Love it.

More Tsukushigata leaf photos... they are such a deep, deep color from above, but when the sun hits them they really glow.

Not sure what is so captivating about this cultivar but it really has something special going on. I've noticed everybody who owns one always speaks about it's beauty.

I bought this cultivar on a whim last fall when I saw the autumn foliage. The way it leafs out in the spring is just as captivating. I agree that it glows when the sun hits it. Also, the pale green samaras provide a lovely contrast to the dark red leaves. Here are two photos taken when the leaves were just emerging.

This year we broke the record for the coldest February in history and had a very cold, truely a solid zone 5 Winter.

This tree is in an unprotected area (exposed to strong winds off Lake Erie) and had zero damage or die-back. It's now going strong and looking great. I wonder if some shirasawanum is in this tree's genetics.

I recommend this tree for its seasonal beauty and its cold hardiness.

Well I broke down a ordered a Tsukushigata. I think it's my favorite maple and it's not even here yet.

The bright green samaras and bright green bark against the red-black leaves... lovely!

Funny indeed... Maybe it wants to be a Manyo no sato when it grows up? lol

My Tsukushigata came today. It's a very large tree for under $100. I'll give it a few days to perk up from the cross country trip and I'll post some photos.

As promised, here are my pics of my Tsukushigata. It still looks rough but is better than when I first got it. I think it will probably be shabby for the rest of this year but be great when it leafs out next spring. It spent one of the hottest weeks we've had this year in a box and most of the leaves have some damage. I can tell it's going to be a great tree when it fully recovers and it's definitely one of the coolest trees in my collection.

Mine looked pretty beat up last year, too, but leafed out perfectly this year. It's a great tree! Looks like you gave it a prominent spot in your yard, too.

Yes I have a couple of "VIP" spots left in the landscape and this took one of them. It's in one of the two main beds in front of the house. I put it next to my Butterfly which is about 7' tall and that is next to a Crimson Queen which is 6.5' tall and about 9' wide so it will be a nice lineup when this Tsukushigata puts some size on.
