Wanted to see Akebono's child, Afterglow, so ventured onto Balaclava between 5th and 6th yesterday. It's a great comparison with the Akebonos on the east side and Afterglows on the west although there is one lone Afterglow on the east. It was also a great place to experience rain, hail and thunder in an unusual storm for Vancouver. seems that the Akebono trees are a few days further advanced but that may indeed be simply because they have more sun than the Afterglows. I hope the pictures will show the differences and similarities.

I've been anxiously (in this case, that's the correct word, not "eagerly") awaiting the blooming of the new trees in this mini-park reworked when Point Grey Road was closed off to thru traffic from Cornwall at Macdonald. Well, on the one hand, the large Incense Cedar that was growing amidst the grove of 'Ukon' has been removed, mostly, so the 'Ukon' look great. I was hoping that the new trees would also be 'Ukon', or would be something that looks nice with 'Ukon', or else something that blooms at a different time. But no, they're 'Tai-haku', blooming at the same time, and to my eye, not particularly harmonious with the older trees. This must have been an expensive planting. The new trees are twice my height at least, and they were just planted last fall. I was hoping that older new trees were installed so they would fit in sooner with the established trees. Maybe they will soon be sweet cherries.

WOW, just wow! And I'm patting myself on the back. I made a note last fall to check the trees on Maple between 12th and 16th. There are seven very nice 'Kiku-zakura' here. They just have a few flowers open, so there is plenty of time to visit. they look very much like the single tree in the West End, and are just as floriferous. I think they look great with the somewhat open buds, but if you can't wait to see the trees, here are some Google streetviews you can look at:
    'Kiku-zakura' at 15th
    'Kiku-zakura' at 13th
    20150403_Maple15th_Kiku-zakura_Cutler_P1170519.jpg 20150403_Maple15th_Kiku-zakura_Cutler_P1170526.JPG 20150403_Maple15th_Kiku-zakura_Cutler_P1170529.JPG 20150403_Maple15th_Kiku-zakura_Cutler_P1170531.JPG 20150403_Maple14th_Kiku-zakura_Cutler_P1170546.JPG

AND, as if that's not enough, there are two 'Shogetsu', one so nice that I doubted that ID, but it looks like the other one, and the flowers on both have fimbriate edges and the few leaves that are open are green. Here is the Google street view of the tree in bloom.
    20150403_Maple14th_Shogetsu_Cutler_P1170532.JPG 20150403_Maple14th_Shogetsu_Cutler_P1170534.JPG 20150403_Maple14th_Shogetsu_Cutler_P1170536.JPG 20150403_Maple14th_Shogetsu_Cutler_P1170537.JPG

Here is the less attractive one.
    20150403_Maple14th_Shogetsu_Cutler_P1170548.jpg 20150403_Maple14th_Shogetsu_Cutler_P1170549.JPG 20150403_Maple14th_Shogetsu_Cutler_P1170550.JPG

AND there is a nice earlier, cherry, I think 'Akebono', though one of the flowers did make me wonder.
    20150403_Maple15th_Akebono_Cutler_P1170527.JPG

AND here is a very pretty sweet cherry, Prunus avium, at 13th. There is a smaller sweet cherry at 15th.

The Chrysanthemum Cherry—can you beat that combination of the two major Japanese floral symbols into one botanical entity? The Maple trees look better than the four Kiku-zakura trees on William Street (Grandview-Woodland). Surely they'll get a star turn on the Blooming Now page, Wendy?

'Ama-no-gawa', with bragging rights! Here are three trees showing off their unique design, doing not too badly in a 1-meter-wide space between a building and the property fence, on the south side of 5th just east of Cypress. They are probably grafted, but the shoot growing from the roots in the 3rd photo is the same cultivar.
    20150404_1888W5thCypress_Ama-no-gawa_Cutler_162005.jpg 20150404_1888W5thCypress_Ama-no-gawa_Cutler_162031.jpg 20150404_1888W5thCypress_Ama-no-gawa_Cutler_162040.jpg 20150404_1888W5thCypress_Ama-no-gawa_Cutler_162113.jpg

From the (unused) tracks at 6th, you can see that there is at least one more tree in this row, this one somewhat fuller than the others, decorating the upper (3rd floor?) balcony.

Here is another 'Ama-no-gawa' planting, a pair of trees at a house on the north side of 3rd just east of Cypress.

'Kanzan' looking both ways on 7th at Cypress.

Nice planting of three 'Shogetsu' trees filling up a front yard between Cypress and Burrard on 13th, not far from the two of this cultivar on Maple Street posted April 3. These trees are probably low-grafted. I think it would have been nicer without the Photinia growing up in the middle.
    20150404_1851W13thCypress_Shogetsu_Cutler_170201.jpg 20150404_1851W13thCypress_Shogetsu_Cutler_165815.jpg 20150404_1851W13thCypress_Shogetsu_Cutler_165950.jpg 20150404_1851W13thCypress_Shogetsu_Cutler_170437.jpg

There is quite an attractive 'Kanzan' just to the left of these trees, I think the same property.
    20150404_1851W13thCypress_Kanzan_Cutler_170024.jpg

Just to the west of these trees on 13th is a 'Yae-beni-shidare', well past peak bloom, that seems to have had a hard life.

Beautiful chrysanthemum-flowered cherry 'Kiku-zakura', seen here in evening light April 05, 2015 and morning light April 06, 2015. Thanks to Wendy Cutler for finding these 7 beautiful trees on west side of Maple Street between W12 and W15 Ave.

I don't believe you people are paying proper attention to the "moonlight on the pine trees" so here is 'Shogetsu' in bloom at NW Maple and W.14th on April 6, 2015.

Funny you should say that. I tried telling the neighbors about the special cherries on their block, but one of them started telling me about moonlight in the pine trees. It turns out that Douglas Justice had run into them yesterday and had already told them about their special cherries.

I went back because Douglas told me about the fragrant Magnolia maudiae on the NW corner of Maple and 14th. The 'Kiku-zakura' and 'Shogetsu' are on the right.

Friday I was going into my car after a walk in Kits Park and I noticed cherry trees at a building across the street at Maple and Ogden-northeast corner-It seems to be a small apartment building and I was able to take a few photos and then tried to identify the trees but wasn't certain so went back Sunday and took more pictures-and determined they were three Amanogawa though rather crowded by the building. And this was verified by Wendy Cutler. I just love their beautiful blossoms.

I'm not sure of the identity of this variety: Shiro-fugen ? cherries in Tatlow Park, Point Grey Road.

The Tatlow Park trees are 'Ukon'; the new trees planted there are 'Tai-haku'.

I'll add a comment that the photos from there and Jean Beatty Park were from March 31.

These photos are from April 10th, on the way walking to an evening concert.
These two 'Ama-no-gawa' on the west side of Larch between 4th and 5th were posted when they had lost most of their flowers in 2009. One is on the boulevard and one across from it on the townhouse property. I remembered them as a little scrawny, but they look great now.
    20150410_2073Larch5th_Ama-no-gawa_Cutler_185354.jpg 20150410_2073Larch5th_Ama-no-gawa_Cutler_185416.jpg

Around the corner is one that is not doing nearly so well.
    20150410_2073Larch5th_Ama-no-gawa_Cutler_185456.jpg

Here is quite a tall 'Ama-no-gawa' in a yard on the north side of 7th west of Stephens.
    20150410_2721W7thStephens_Ama-no-gawa_Cutler_190317.jpg 20150410_2721W7thStephens_Ama-no-gawa_Cutler_190305.jpg

We passed a couple of 'Kanzan' streets:
    Balaclava, from 7th to 6th
    20150410_BalaclavaW7th-6th_Kanzan_Cutler_191035.jpg

    Trutch, from 8th to 7th
    20150410_8th-7thTrutch_Kanzan_Cutler_191229.jpg

Here is a 'Shirofugen' on the south side of W 8th west of Trutch. I was seriously beyond the limits of my cellphone camera by then. Good thing the concert was nearby. If anyone wants to post a better photo, I'll replace the link on the map.

And in the lane south of York between Arbutus and 1st Avenue, there is a line of Ama-no-gawa. Really I think they must get the award for the tallest ornamental cherries in Vancouver. In full bloom now, they certainly take one's attention away from the lane detritus poles for the overhead wires. If only the sky had been blue.... At the Yew end of the lane there are a couple of very sweet camellias showing off their last blooms of the season.

The two 'Tai-haku' on Burrard at Cornwall are at peak bloom.

Between them is the 'Hosokawa-nioi' still in bud. These flowers are from the rootstock - they look sort of like 'Somei-yoshino'.
