Perhaps a brief explanation for this posting is called for. This article may be of interest to people in the Vancouver area who tend to or admire the gardens that have been established alongside the railway tracks along the Arbutus corridor as some of these gardens have apparently encroached on CPR property. The Outdoor Gardening forum seemed the most place to post.

City of Vancouver should consider purchasing the land from CPR (if possible) and re-purpose it into green space/community gardens/walking/biking trails/etc...

If the name "Arbutus corridor" means what it suggests, perhaps CPR have a commitment to preserve natural stands of Arbutus menziesii close to their tracks, to protect them from damage by illegal encroachment?

No, it's called the Arbutus Corridor because it somewhat runs parallel to Arbutus St. in Vancouver. I think there are arbutus near it but not in the right-of-way.

Railway corridors tend to be subject to herbicide applications as well be sources of exposure to anything noxious railway cars or locomotives may be giving off, prime example down my way these days is coal dust. So people shouldn't be snugging up to the corridors with incompatible uses anyway. I wouldn't even live along a busy roadway myself, due to the pollution from internal combustion engines and asbestos brake pads.

As an aside, I once saw a train pulling 20 40-tonne wagons of hydrogen cyanide. Hate to think what would happen if that lot had leaked out. At least it wasn't on the roads.

Radioactive waste and on an on through the list all get hauled by trains.

 

Update: City of Vancouver to create new green corridor from old railway route​

 

The line has not been used for rail traffic for at least 10 years, there is a Starbucks on the line further North. It was used to provide grain to the Molson Brewery at Burrard and 4th Ave. when that was a going concern.
