Hi there, I was just wondering if any of you have seen, grown or seen seeds for sale of Smooth Ground Cherry/ Physalis subglabrata? It apparently has dark purple, edible fruits that are almost exactly like a tomatillo in shape, size and texture, except they're slightly sweeter. As well, the plant is extremely hardy, being native to parts of the North Eastern States and Southern Ontario, and grows in moist to wet soils. It would be really cool to be able to grow a frost hardy tomatillo like Physalis, so if anyone has any leads, please let me know! Thanks!
Would be interested aswell. I've grown ground cherries or poha berry as I know them. The orange smooth skinned, husked little fruits. They were quite good. But definitely not hardy -Luke
"It is sometimes used as a hallucinogenic plant, and its cultivation for other than ornamental purposes is outlawed in Louisiana by State Act 159." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physalis But it's still for sale! http://rareseeds.com/vegetables-p-z/tomatillo/tomatillo-purple.html
