Hello, I am trying to identify a tree I found in Q.E. Park, hoping it's a local one. Thanks in advance.
Metasequoia glyptostroboides "Gold Rush". I believe. The golden form of the dawn Redwood. http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=e...m=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&biw=1255&bih=537 Not a local tree. Metasequoia originate from China! Do read this article esp the History. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metasequoia
Sorry Michael but I beg to differ. We grow both the ordinary one and "Gold Rush". "Gold Rush" just glows yellow at the moment. This pic shows them side by side.
Unlabeled found trees can look like a known cultivar but not actually belong to it. Vancouver Parks may be able to say if the one tree is 'Gold Rush' or not. Perhaps one that appears here is the same specimen: http://vancouver.ca/parks/activecommunity/pdf/QE-ISpyTrees.pdf
But also worth bearing mind, Britain has had its warmest / earliest spring on record; Vancouver (if I remember rightly) had a fairly late spring. How did yours look 3 or 4 weeks ago?
At one point Ogon was just a seedling in a row of (irradiated?) Metasequoias. This one does look a bit more yellow than my regular Dawn Redwood. My Ogon is a little darker this year. Overcast very wet spring. Looks well on its way to another three feet of growth. Here is a pic of one I saw at Dawes last week. "National" is a cultivar there I would have just guessed as a species. I can usual spot Ogon clearly. Any nutrient deficiencies in Metasequoia cause this? Plenty of yellow Pin Oaks around here.
