Seems ages since we had a stumper. How about this.

 

Hopseed bush?

 

Dipteronia sinensis.

Gosh, thought you had it 1st guess! But no sorry it is not Hopseed bush... Dodonaea.
(It is very similar in appearance isn't it.)

Yes, it could well be the same tree! It was taken on Sunday at Westonbirt.

We do have one in the garden but have never seen any seeds on it.

For those that have never come across this Dipteronia sinensis it is in the same family as Acers. Aceraceae.

I checked the RHS Plantfinder 2009-2010 before I posted. It still shows it as Aceraceae!

 

The whole family has been merged.

 

It is Xanthoceras which is the troublemaker here - it is less closely related to the rest of Sapindaceae than Dipteronia, etc., are.
