We received 5 blueberry plants as gifts this summer which are now planted around the yard. Is it necessary to cover them or protect them somehow for the winter? Is there risk of them getting crushed if we get snow like we did last year?

We lived in Richmond a number of years back and had about 15 big blueberry bushes. We never covered them or protected them in any way. SW BC is the blueberry capital of Canada and I don't think any bushes are covered.

So I would think they are hardy enough. I might be inclined to brush heavy snow loads off the bushes.

Thanks so much for the quick reply! Good point that you don't usually see them covered when you drive by blueberry farms.

you don't see the plants covered, but they are all quite piled up with sawdust at the roots to make sure that the roots drain properly though...
