I repotted a palmatum about two weeks ago because it was in a well-protected area of my garden and benefited from a few hotter days; I cut some of the roots, put them in a pot, sealed the top with wax and left them in my garage for a few days. I also have an acer shirawasanum that leafs out later so I tried to graft a branch tip directly to the root. I don't think it will work, but I put the grafted plant under a cold frame. The buds are swelling just like the ones on the tree the scion comes from, but again, i doubt it will work. Has anyone tried this kind of graft?
Alan, I've never heard of grafting directly to roots. I know some people can graft really CLOSE to the roots so you can hardly see the graft union, but I'm not that good yet! Let us know how it goes, and post pics if you can.
