      <content:encoded><![CDATA[I don&#039;t seem to have posted this yet - maybe I was waiting to figure out where to put it. They are from the beginning of December.<br />
I got all excited about this green trunk, on an <i>Acer macrophyllum</i> street tree a few blocks from me. I think there might be two mosses here, one being similar to a feather moss and the other a leafy moss. I have hardly ever given mosses the time of day, but there it was at eye level with the sun shining on it. I had no excuse to not give it some attention....<br />

I never photographed it during the two years it spent as what I thought were two leaves around 1 cm long appearing, then disappearing, then reappearing from the drainage hole of a pot in which I thought I was just trying to root some cuttings. I did remember that I once had a fern with stripey leaves, but I didn&#039;t recognize this at all as being fern-like, thought that was just a co-incidence. But Plant@Net came up with...<br />

I think that most of the Sumac shrubs, or small trees up this way are a lot bigger than those in post #26.       <content:encoded><![CDATA[<i>Polystichum polyblepharum,</i> Japanese lace fern or tassel fern, in the wood fern family Dryopteridaceae, has been mentioned in a few threads now, two quite recent. I am posting this because I am still awed by its tidy architecture, but also as a comparison to another of the same genus. On this one, the fronds are very stiff and tough-looking and the pinnae are shiny.<br />

My <i>Drypoteris lepidopoda</i> Sunset fern is producing lovely new fronds, so this morning first thing I thought I would capture a photo.<br />

      <title>Sword fern - brownish leaves</title>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[Again this year, I see some of my sword ferns (<i>Polystichum munitum</i>) are becoming brownish.  It doesn&#039;t look fungal to me nor are there any signs of spider mites so I&#039;m wondering not only what the cause may be but also whether it might spread to the unaffected sword ferns nearby.  All the better if it is preventable or curable.  The ferns get regular watering through the dry months and have excellent drainage.  They are growing in bright semi-shade.<br />
