I have run across a type thistle plant I am unfamiliar with. I think it is invasive and came in some fill dirt, and I would like to identify what type of thistle it is if possible. If you need more images let me know. The knife blade is about 11.5 cm

I live in Tenerife Island, Spain, off the coast of Africa and my neighbor has this growing a cross the street from his house but nor he nor I have any idea what it is.
So I'm turning here for help. I tried some plant ID apps to no avail.
Characteristic is the very strong smell which I would say is mint-like...

However, I keep coming across trees that the "Seek" app on my phone identifies as Katsura trees.
Both trees have heart shaped leaves and little brown nutlets. They are so similar looking that even the phone app mixes them up often.

So I'm here to ask: how to differentiate these...

This shrub grows wild in the woods (lower NY zone 5) and I never noticed it until this fall when I saw the beautiful bright rose leaves and went to investigate. It has a most unusual bark. The younger stems are green and surrounded by tan fins about 1-1.5 inches long which circle around the stem so that there are 4 fins that alternate working their way up the whole stem. This one was around 1,5 m high and looked like a it was fully grown.
The leaves are very soft, like velvet.
I have been told that it's sometimes locally called Napoleon'hat due to the shape of the leaves.

It seems likely, it was planted as a specimen tree many years ago.
I have walked past it for years, this year it seems to be looking especially good.
