I've brought the forums back online, we'll see how things go.

I'd originally intended to move them to a larger "drive" on the same server, but I failed with that several times. The operating system has a lot of security features enabled, and it requires me to learn a lot that is not part of my daily or even monthly job -- and still didn't succeed.

The machine running the forums went down for about 27 hours starting on the AM of Jan 12, 2023.

This was the result of me mucking about on the web server trying to make changes for a new web tool that a student is working on. I tripped a software fuse that ensured server integrity, and not knowing how to reset it, left it up to UBC IT to restore the machine from an earlier backup -- that was the waiting part.

I'd expect more hiccups over the next 16 months. The server operating...

I've been kind of quiet for a while. My husband took a new position in San Diego last year. I stayed in Vancouver and worked through last summer, but it is too difficult to keep homes in two countries, so I have left my job at the Garden and have moved to San Diego. We also keep a home in Tucson as we have for 20 years. What a transition for a gardener! From rainy green Vancouver to the Desert Southwest. I really miss the incredible forests of BC, but there is a lot to explore...
