withering Japanese Maple

    Half of this 6'ht cutleaf Japanese maple is withered, the stems are black, and not producing buds. There are shoots coming off of the main stem.

    Any ideas what the trouble is?

    The photos show dead shoots, not wintering live shoots!

    Investigate the possibility of Verticillium wilt disease.

    You're quite right the shoots on the other side of the tree seem healthy and are sporting lovely little red buds. The ones on this side of the tree are black and dry, no bids at all. I will check out the wilt as you suggest.
