Could someone please identify the fungus for me? It's about 1 inch across at the widest point. Even a family name (preferably English) would be helpful. This picture was taken in Guyana, S. America.

    Thanks,

    Chris

This conspicuous, bright orange fungus is a polypore named Pycnoporus sanguineus. It is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Aboriginals in some countries use it for medical purposes. The very similar P. cinnabarinus is common in temperate and cold regions.
