I grew Walla Walla three years but only a few matured. I like the no-heat. Now I grow Vidalia, which is almost identical but not so delicate.

I've been growing them for at least the last 3 years, and they have always produced large, sweet onions from seed planted early in spring. I've tried fall plantings, but these have mostly failed. Only a few plants survived the winter. However, I started them rather late, in September; so they might have done better with an August planting.

The spring planted onions are sown in February or March under a plastic tunnel cloche and transplanted when they are about 6" tall.
