Identification: Unknown, unusual

    Pecos Wilderness, not far from the river itself. About 8000 ft asl.
    Saw only 2 of these, very near each other.

    Interesting! I don't know what this is but something about it suggests club fungi, like Clavariadelphus.
    The odd top centre surface is puzzling...

    My thought was a club of some sort, too, however, it is way larger than anything I've seen before.
    I see I failed to provide any scale in the photo. That mushroom is perhaps 4" wide on the top.
    It has been unusually rainy here in northern NM the last couple weeks, maybe that accounts for it.

    Sure looks like a Clavariadelphus trucatus. I recommend tasting the edge when you come across these, it should be distinctly sweet.
