I've heard conflicting advice about the wrapping that comes on rootballs. Complete removal of the wrap does remove impediments to root growth and permit inspection of the root health and structure. However, depending on the tree size & rootball size it can be impractical to remove the whole wrapping.

The burlap or wire does help to keep the rootball intact. Cutting the ties that might girdle the trunk , is important to the long term health of the tree. Rolling the wrap or wire basket is very helpful too.

What have others experienced with burlapped rootballs?
