Total plant newb: need indentification and advice please!

This was noted in the other plant identification thread as well. I think this and the leaf texture are the simplest ways for an amateur to differentiate between the two plants.

 

Sorry about that. Species and botanical concepts sometimes cannot be explained in super simple terms.

Also, my apologies to lmarieaa for taking your request for the ID of a few plants and turning it into a scientific discussion. Due to the restructuring of this forum we sometimes don't get the chance to bring up new subject matter as we did before.
