    Hi
I made the mistake of putting too many wood ashes in my compost. I am not sure how to rectify the problem. Should I add more nitrogen? Right now it is very heavy and the composting process seems to have stopped. Any ideas?
    Thanks

Ash contains soluble salts. Most of these ions are nutrient ions and should be captured. My inclination would be to turn the pile adding browns (leaves, straw, etc.) as well as a bit of soil. Depending on the pile, some grass clippings or other green material may be in order. Water it as you go but don't over water since the soluble nutrients will be leached out.

A better way to "water" is using a clay slurry that coats the compost ingredients. This has many benefits but is a lot of additional work.
