a hint to help start plants in the small greenhouse and garden.
Save your empty toilet paper rolls, stack in a container and fill with potting soil.
I use it for starting peas and beans. Keeps the roots separated and easy to plant.

If I plant seed directly into the garden, it takes much longer to germinate and some small creatures seem to chew off the emerging seedling.

A good technique for small batches, but I've found (the hard way) that if you're really packing the rolls together to maximize space (same goes for fibre pots), the paper begins to grow mold over time, which spreads to the soil and seeds. As long as the rolls aren't packed together so they touch, with decent air space between, it works alright.
