What are the possible causes of a soft caudex on a ponytail palm? I currently have a ponytail that started out with a firm, hard caudex but about a week or two after transplanting it the caudex has softened. It's not a mushy softness as there is some resistance when I squeeze gently -- I've hesitated on watering on the off chance that the damp medium I transplanted the ponytail into was the culprit but the caudex continues to get softer. My ponytail is situated in an eastern facing window and typically gets a through watering every few weeks (I water it until excess flows through the drainage hole).
