Shrub with red buds

    I have figured it out.... it’s the Viburnum tinus, likely ‘spring bouquet’ aka ‘compacta’. It’s listed as drought and salt tolerant.

    This specimen is on an oceanside path in full sun, sandwiched between a hardy pampas and a Vaccinium ovatum. Sort of took me by surprise as it’s doing well in what I thought would be an unlikely position. It received absolutely no water this summer except perhaps from salt spray...!

    It’s looking a tad chlorotic and though dense, it’s small in size for its age (approx 8 yrs), but it’s one tough plant!

    I was just about to post, when Polar posted the reply above. Leaves don't look right for skimmia. I have an evergreen Viburnum that looks a lot like this.

    So I concur with the ID. At least the viburnum part.
