Identification: Sendai-shidare - Single white blossoms, mid-season, pendulous

    Yes, we have a name. We seem to have sold Douglas on 'Sendai-shidare', according to an email I received tonight. Thanks for all that work, Mariko.

    I'm so pleased, as I've been using that name on our new map, due out in the next month or two.

    Unlike the earlier pendulous trees with white blossoms, this 'Sendai-shidare' is putting out leaves before the blossoms are open at all.

    Note the long, thin sepals.

    Here is a photo, from one of the two trees on 120th Street south of Hwy 10. Also leaves and stipules from that tree. The leaves were around 12cm long.

    I was happy to see that the leaves and stipules look similar to the 'Sendai-shidare' on Comox St in the West End, as I was always a bit anxious about my ID for this one.

    Here are photos from the trees on Comox St. Tons of little cherries this year.
